Vodafone Launches Low-Cost Ubuntu Webbook in South Africa

Webbook, a-10 inch netbook with an ARM-based processor and Ubuntu Linux operating system, is now available in South Africa through Vodafone's South African subsidiary Vodacom.

The Webbook has a Freescale i.MX51 processor, 512 MB RAM, and 4 GB internal storage. This netbook is sufficient for web surfing, checking e-mail, and typing up documents.

The Webbook alone will be available for as low as South African Rand (ZAR) 1,499 or around $185. It will cost about ZAR 1,899 (~$234) for a year of mobile broadband access, with a monthly quota of 100 MB. Customers who sign up for a 2-year contract can get the Webbook and a modem for only ZAR 189 per month (~$23) with a higher monthly data quota of 500 MB.

Vodacom says the Webbook  should get up to 7 hours of battery life.
