Acer has technically upgraded its 18.4
inch lineup to state-of-the-art. An
Intel Core i3-330M and ATI Mobility
HD 5640 speak for a pretty good
performance. The Aspire 8942G is thus
suitable as a multimedia platform or
as a full-fledged desktop replacement
can be read in our comprehensive
review. The Acer 8942G is definitely what gamers
dream, coming with a 1.6 GHz Intel I7
quad core 8GB DDR3 RAM and AMD5850 video
with 1GB DDR5 all that promises full
DirectX-11 support. The laptop comes with the latest Core i7
quad-core processor with a high-end ATI
Mobility Radeon HD5850 graphics. Thus it
makes quick work of high-definition Blu
-ray movies and games. This attractive
notepad does not have a mere read-only
Blu-ray combo drive. The Aspire 8942G is
thus able to write to the high-density
media, allowing up to 25GB of data to be
stored on the optical disc. Whilst the Aspire 8940G's 18.4 inch Full
HD display did not exactly provide for
feelings of rapture due to a meager
brightness of 155.5 cd/m2 and a not so
good illumination of 67%, the Aspire
8942G's display turns out far better,
even if top rates aren't achieved once
again. The contrast and black value can
thus be described as adequate. The
colors appear quite natural and saturated.
The image is also sufficiently bright
with a pretty rich contrast as well.
Only the not really optimal black value
leaves us with a sour taste, especially
in dark scenes.
But the features that are really impressive
are the five speakers and subwoofer under
the hood, which should prove to be a great
delight to the audiofiles. The unit also
comes with an integrated TV tuner to capture
free-to-air channels. The laptop is decked
out with two hard disk drive bays with a
total of 1.2GB capacity for storing media
files. So enjoy music, games and movies
from any place you go!
The hard disk is of Western Digital and has
an amazing capacity of 640 Giga Byte. Because
a further (easily accessible) external hard
disk slot is concealed in the case, the
capacity of your Acer Aspire 8942G can easily
be increased to one Terra Byte in the future.
The already built-in hard disk runs with 5400
RPM and has only one single partition. The
throughput rate (79.5 MB/s) and access rate
(18.3 ms) are inconspicuous. The transfer
rate of averagely 62.2 MB/s is quite good and
is somewhat better than a majority of
notebooks.
Other features that deserve our attention
include a fingerprint sensor for quick logins,
e-SATA port and an ExpressCard/54 slot. The
latter is a fast disappearing standard on
laptops as most peripherals prefer USB
compatibility instead. The 18.4 inch Acer 8940G has one of the
largest screens in the notepad market with
an excellent performance and a high quality
audio. So it is definitely worth a
consideration if you are in search of a
notepad!
