Windows 8 Could Run on First-Gen Netbooks

Windows 8 Eee PC 1000H

The consumer preview of Windows 8 is already out. You might be wondering if it would run on netbooks smoothly, not just your current netbooks, but the old first-gen netbooks. The consumer preview was tested on the Asus Eee PC 1000H. This netbook was released back in 2008 and its specs include 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and GMA 950 graphics in a 10-inch form factor with 1024×600 pixel resolution. Even with this outrageously dated specs, the consumer preview is snappy.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview requires your system to have at least 1 GHz processor, a gig of RAM and 16GB of storage space.

Of course, there are problems running the consumer preview on such "old" machines. Windows 8 requires 1366×768 for optimal experience. You just can't access the Windows store to download apps for the Metro style user interface unless you have 1024×768 or better.

There's a workaround though. You can download a Windows 7 graphics driver from Intel. By that measure, you could persuade the OS that you have a 1024×768 display.

You could actually set the netbook without the capabilities of higher resolution to 1024×768 and even 1152×864. However, don't expect everything to be beautiful. Some texts would look funky and images absurd. You can access the Windows Store though with this work around. You need the 1366×768 pixel for windows snapping though.

Windows 8 consumer preview

This means that the minimum resolution requirement would force netbook, tablet and other machines to pony up the resolution in order to cater for the Windows 8 OS.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview runs well on netbooks (mostly)

Windows 8 consumer previewWindows 8 Consumer Preview may be optimized for computers with touchscreens and high resolution displays, but Microsoft's latest operating system also runs reasonably well on netbooks and other older computers. The Asus Eee PC 1000H was released in the summer of 2008. It has a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, and...

Amazon 6″ Kindles, Not Gonna Happen

We've run a story here that Amazon is launching a 6″ Kindle refresh and we are sad to inform you that the rumors are inaccurate. Strong sources indicate that the color Kindle is entirely fiction.

Here are the reasons why the 6″ colored Kindle will never happen soon: Amazon shall need a new production line, and it is not done yet and it would take a full year to set  that line up. The E-ink technology was already in the market, but it was not until last summer that the screen hit China. And this was the 9″ screen not the 6″. Similar device has recently started shipping in the US and Russia: the Ectaco Jetbook Color.

Also, Amazon is known for making quality products and the screen of this E-ink is not of high quality, it's actually very low. Reviews report pale colors and greyscale.

Samsung NP305U1A Review

The Samsung NP305U1A is a netbook released in the middle of last year. There has been a few reviews about the netbook, since most of the tech sites reviewed its full laptop edition, the ones powered with an Intel i3 processor. This netbook is an 11.6 form factor. It has matte screen with 1366×768 display resolution.

Samsung rammed a 12-inch screen in the 11.6-inch form factor allowing a very thin bezel. The netbook has matte finish all over its body with an aluminum accent, however, the netbook itself is made out of plastic. Even so, the netbook feels sturdy.

The keyboard is an island-style chiclet with rubbery feel. The touchpad is average but allows multitouch gesture albeit very poorly. Powered by AMD Fusion, the netbook could handle HD video playback and light gaming. It can't run modern games but casual ones can be played without much problems. The speaker is below average, given how cheap this netbook is, it is not a surprise. The 2GB RAM is enough, but those who prefer more could easily upgrade this device. Unfortunately, this netbook has only one slot for RAM.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is built-in. Three USB ports are also included, all 2.0 though, not 3.o speeds, but one of the USB ports is a powered one so you can charge your gadgets even if the netbook is turned off. A card reader is also included. HDMI as well.

Depending with the vendor, this netbook is available in 3, 4, and 6-cell battery. The 3 cell could give you 2 and a half hours of autonomy. The higher capacity batteries, of course, offer longer battery life. This netbook comes with Windows 7 Home Basic Edition at 64-bit.

Malata Roadmap May Have Ultrabook-Netbook Crossover

Reports are coming in that  the 2012-2013 roadmap from Malata, a brand of the Wanlida Group in China, will  include a bunch of mobile products as well as interestingly  ultrathin products with 13.3", 11.6" and 10" screen size. More interesting is that the company seems to join the Ultrabook and netbook bandwagon by offering an Intel Atom Cedar Trail CPU option.

Though there's very little information about the claim, it is certain that offering an Ultrabook chassis with an Intel Atom platform option inside is a bo move from a marketing perspective. On the other hand, Customers will be confused if they will be releasing  high-spec netbook or a low-end Ultrabook.

A 13.3" ultra-light with SSD, 50% longer battery life and lower cost could surely keep up with the competition, since it has the potential to go against the lower-end of AMDs ultrathin strategy. There are notions that Intel should consider this secondary market and re-fresh of the netbook idea. Though this should be managed carefully

Lenovo Gets Rid of its S Series Netbooks

If you blinked you probably would have missed it… but at CES this year Lenovo quietly introduced a few new members of its low-cost S series of netbooks and portable notebooks. They kind of got lost in the shuffle of tablets, ultrabooks, and other devices Lenovo was showing off… and it looks like the Lenovo IdeaPad S110, S200, and S206 might never really get much time to shine.

Lenovo IdeaPad S100

Looks like Lenovo is getting rid of its S series netbooks as all of them are not listed in the company's website and deemed as "out of stock". Lenovo said that they won't be replacing the netbooks right away. However, it is not clear if Lenovo will push the netbooks in to the retail market.

This could also mean that the older S series netbook will be replaced with the new models not ready for primetime yet.

Admittedly, the netbook market is plummeting in record pace. Dell got rid of its netbook line entirely. Intel reported that the Atom-based netbook shipments were much lower last year than in 2010.

The average price of a 10-inch netbook starts at $300 and that doesn't mean profit for the makers. With the demand for  tablets and notebooks, the netbook market is shrinking by the minute.

Looks like the 10-inch netbooks are getting axed left and right.

Malata's Roadmap Show Intriguing Tablets

Malata, unlike ultra-cheap tablet makers, actually comes up with half-decent budget tablets. And now the company has released a roadmap that offers  lots of tablets to watch out for. malata_tablet_4There will be Tegra 3 tablets dubbed SMB-B1023, including a 7-incher, a 9-incher and a 10-incher versions of the same tablet. All of these tablets will have ICS as its OS. There is a tablet with lots of ports to boast, like USB, mini-US and card reader, unfortunately it won't have ICS as its OS. Tablets are the companies main focus however it seems like they are going to compete in the Phablet market with 5-inch Gingerbread device.

Are easy upgrades important in mobile computers?

HP Mini 210Some mobile devices are incredibly easy to upgrade. HP couldn't make upgrading the RAM or even the hard drive in its netbooks much easier -- you don't even need a screwdriver to remove the base plate of many recent models. Others are much more difficult to upgrade. Want more storage space in that iPad? You should have thought of that...

Intel Atom Cedar D2550 Has Slightly Faster GPU

The Cedar Trail was originally made to be released by the end of last year. However, the roll out had been incredibly slow with most netbooks sporting D2600 or D2800 CPU. In the desktop front, there are revisions with the D2500 and D2700. The D2550 will have a slightly speedier GPU clock rate at 640MHz (compared to 400MHz of the previous iteration). The CPU clock stills remain at 1.86GHz and TDP also remains at 10W. Everything else is the same between the two chips.

It is rumored that this minor refresh would be introduced at CeBit. So better watch out.

Acer Updates Acer Iconia Tab A100 and A500

Ice Cream Sandwich are now being released by various manufacturers. However, the pace of these updates is glacial. Now, at least, Acer tweeted that they are confirming an ICS update for their Acer Iconia Tab A100 and A500.

Last week, acer started rolling out updates of their A200 tablet. It's a surprise that Acer included the A100 in this update. The A100 didn't really receive mainstream success. Acer has keeping their game up by updating their devices.

Early Atom Chips On Par with Modern ARM Processors

Over the past few years ARM-based processors have been getting more and more powerful, while chip makers have been working to make x86 chips more power efficient. So it should come as no surprise that we'll soon seesmartphones and tablets with Intel chips. But we may also see laptop and desktop computers with ARM processors one day — or at least very powerful phones and tablets.

TI OMAP 4

Phoronix compared a group of devices with Intel and ARM processors. Ubuntu Linux 12.04 alpha was used as  the OS for running a bevy of benchmarks. Ubuntu is an obvious choice as there are several versions of the OS that are optimized for both architecture.

The benchmarks are not perfect though as the the hardware used were not really comparable but the results are somewhat interesting, nevertheless. The ARM-based machine was one of the newest Texas Instruments have and was pitted against a PC with the oldest Atom chipset.

The system with 1GHz TI OMPA dual core processor came ahead against the netbook running Intel Atom N270 at 1.6GHz, only in some benchmarks.

The OMAP is pitifully slow in encoding video with FFMPEG but is as fast as the Atom machine with H.264 video encoding. The ARM -based gadget came out leading in the audio encoding tests and other benchmarks.

Depending on your needs, the modern ARM-based CPU might be the same as your four-year old x86 processor. The truth is, modern Atom chips are not much faster than those released back on 2008, even if they are already dual cores.

We could find netbooks, nettops and low-powered desktops that are armed with ARM one day. Certainly, Linux are not the only OS, productive OS that is, that can run both on ARM and x86 processors. Windows 8 does too.
