DTS Netbooks and Notebooks To Be Available in 2010

DTS, Inc. (previously known as Digital Theater Systems, Inc.) is teaming up with netbook and notebook manufacturers to bring digital surround sound to computing technology by as early as 2010. Asustek Computer is already planning to adopt DTS' audio solutions on its motherboards.

In addition to ASUS, DTS currently has partnerships with notebook manufacturers such as Acer, Foxconn Electronics, and Shuttle, and chipmakers such as Intel, Realtek, and VIA Technologies.

DTS' audio solutions for PCs and mobile computing devices currently accounts for less than 5% of the company's revenues, but this market still has a lot of potential. The proportion of DTS' revenues comprised of audio solutions sales for PCs and other computers may rise to 15-20% by 2011.

Analysts Expect Taiwanese Netbook Stocks to Boom

Taiwanese stock market projections by some analysts are expecting good things for Taiwanese netbook manufacturers, according to Bloomberg.

Portfolio manager in Taipei of First Financial Investment Trust Co. Jacky Cheng explained quite simply why netbook stocks are likely to rise:

"In a bad economy, everyone is switching to the cheaper netbooks."

He didn't say just which firms are expected to boom this quarter but everyone's eyes are on Acer, which recently took the number one position in netbook sales.

Taiwanese markets took a hit after the July 28 arrival of Typhoon Morakot, Taiwan's deadliest storm in half a century. Nevertheless, the Taiex index has seen unbelievable gains of 49% this year.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 gets 1280 x 720 screen option... in Europe

s10-2 hd

cyberport

A few months back there was a rumor going around that the Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 would eventually be available with a higher resolution 1280 x 720 pixel display. And it looks like eventually means today, because the netbook is available from a number of retailers in Germany with the high resolution display for about 349 Euros (about $499 US).

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 M21BCGE has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, a 10.1 inch display, 1GB of RAM, a 160G hard drive, and a 6 cell battery as well as a 1.3MP webcam, 3 USB ports, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 4-in-1 card reader.

While the netbook has the same Intel 945GSE chipset as most Intel Atom powered netbooks, some stores report that it uses Intel's 4500M graphics media accelerator, while other retailers say it has the same Intel GMA 950 graphics found in most netbooks.

While the new model isn't available in the United States  yet, I did notice today that Lenovo is offering US customers a few more configuration options for the Ideapad S10-2. You can now customize your own netbook with a base price of $330.

For a bit of extra cash you can upgrade the processor from an Atom N270 to an N280 chip, choose to add Bluetooth, and opt for a 6 cell battery instead of the standard 3 cell version. Adding all the bells and whistles brings the price of a grey, white, or black model to $401.25. If you want pink, you'll have to pay $15 more.

What's interesting is that you can get a white model with the exact same specs for $399 if you order a pre-configured unit.

Update: It looks like the HD version of the S10-2 is headed to Japan as well.

ASUS planning ultrathin laptops with CULV processors?

The Asus rumor parade continues today with news that the company may soon have a few ultrathin laptops to compete with the Acer Aspire 1410 and Dell Inspiron 11z. DigiTimes reports that Asus plans to launch two new thin and light notebooks on September 7th, using upcoming 45m chips from Intel. One machine would use the Intel Celereon 743 processor, while the other would pack an Intel SU2300 CPU.

The laptops will reportedly ship in Taiwan, China, and Europe first. The United States always seems to get the cool toys a bit late, but on the bright side, they're usually at least a few bucks cheaper by the time they get here.

DigiTimes suggests that MSI and Acer will also announce new products based on the Intel chips soon. This report comes at the same time as a source has leaked what may be a product roadmap for upcoming Asus Eee PC netbooks. But most folks consider mini-laptops with Intel's Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (or CULV) processors to be a step above netbooks, and the machines generally have 11.6 inch or larger displays. I'd be surprised if Asus slaps the Eee PC name on these models. If they exist.

Report: 1 in 5 notebooks shipped is a netbook

ds q2 09

There've been a lot of reports indicating that the demand for netbooks might be cooling off. But you knwo what? DisplaySearch reports that 22.2% of all notebooks shipped during the second quarter of 2009 were netbooks. Mini-laptops also saw a quarter to quarter 40% increase in shipments , compared with 22% growth in the traditional laptop space.

Part of the growth has been spurred by telecoms in Europe and other areas that offer cheap or free netbooks to customers who sign up for long terms service contracts. Netbooks represent a larger share of the pie in Europe and North America than in developing nations. But in some areas including Latin America and Greater China, netbook penetration is actually higher than notebook penetration.

It's not entirely clear from the press release whether DisplaySearch is counting newer 11.6 inch and 12.1 inch laptops as "netbooks," but I don't think it matters too much since these larger computers were still pretty rare during most of Q2 2009.

Netbook Sales Explode Further

According to DisplaySearch, 2Q 2009 was lucrative for netbook industry giants, with 38 million netbook sales contributing to 22.2% of the PC market.

Demand grew 40% over the first quarter, compared to 22% growth over the same period by notebooks.

Growth wasn't identical among all regions, however, with Latin America and China seeing the most gains. Many first-time buyers in those regions are opting for cheaper netbooks in the current tough economy.

Credit is also due to providers of mobile broadband, whose netbook subsidies and 3G programs have been attractive to budgeting parents and students.

Asus Eee Keyboard dissected again... this time by the FCC

01

Sure, we've seen the upcoming Asus Eee Keyboard with its top off before. But it's always so much more exciting when an official government body like the FCC does the dirty work for you. It makes it feel both more official, and a bit more like we're seeing something we weren't really meant to see.

The FCC has published a series of documents related to the Eee Keyboard, the upcoming multimedia-centric PC-in-a-keyboard from Asus. Most of the information is of a highly technical nature and has to do with wireless frequencies. But buried within one of the reports were a few photos of a dissected Eee Keyboard. If you were planning on picking one up and swapping its innards with a faster solid state disk or, I don't know, removing the guts and just using the machine as an overpriced standard keyboard, the FCC is making it a bit easier to see what's on the insides.

Word on the street is that the Eee Keyboard could be available in October. The fact that the FCC is looking at the computer would seem to indicate that the US could be one of the places where the machine will be available at or near launch. But not everything that passes through the FCC makes it to the US. Earlier this year, the FCC published some documents related to the Eee PC 1004DN, the first Asus netbook to sport a DVD drive. But that model was never launched in North America.

DTS audio coming to Asus netbooks

dts

If you had to pick one thing that netbooks are known for, I'm willing to bet you wouldn't point out their spectacular audio quality. The truth is, most netbooks have cheapy, tinny-sounding speakers. Things definitely pick up when you plug in headphones. But DTS Digital Entertainment plans to help Asus step up its game when it comes to netbook audio.

DTS has announced a partnership with Asus to bring its digital surround sound technology to ASUS motherboards, notebooks, and netbooks. Netbooks with DTS audio could begin showing up in 2010. The technology creates a virtual surround sound system using either two speakers or headphones.

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell Netbook Wins EISA Award

Eisa Logo

The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) has awarded the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell netbook the prestigious European Netbook 2009-2010 award, and it's easy to see why. The slim netbook was described by the Mobile Devices Panel as having "one [of] the largest [LED-backlit displays] in its category", being "very easy to carry" and containing the flexible "Intel Atom N280 processor, the very best in the field".

One sentence in particular summed up the EISA designation:

"If you want to have the most powerful netbook, and the most fashionable one, the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell is your best choice."

That's quite a lot of praise, but considering the Seashell's ergonomic and superior form it's hard to disagree. Samson Hu, VP of the ASUS Eee Business Unit explained just what ASUS was going for when it designed the Seashell netbook:

"When we set about designing the Eee PC 1008HA Seashell, we wanted to make a statement both in terms of aesthetics and functionality… We were keen to equip it with the very best features, but remained sensitive to how this would impact the overall form of the device. I think we've struck a perfect balance with the Eee PC 1008HA Seashell - everything about it just makes sense. Receiving EISA's European Netbook 2009 - 2010 award reassures us that we are charting the right course with our design and development efforts."

Amen to that. Keep it up, ASUS, and we'll keep buying your netbooks!

Netbooks to Have DTS Audio Solutions Soon

With all the features that have been put into netbooks, what could more could we possibly expect from netbook manufacturers to make their machines still interesting? Well, Asustek got an idea – how about putting DTS audio capability? Sounds good right.

Well, a netbook equipped with DTS solutions may become a reality pretty soon as Asustek and DTS has reached a partnership agreement which will put DTS on Asustek motherboards. DTS-equipped netbooks will be available sometime in 2010 according to DTS CEO Jon Kirchner.

Mr. Kirchner believes that DTS has different levels of solutions that can be used for PC products including netbooks. And the company wants to maximize its current ties with PC manufacturers including Asustek, Acer and others to integrate their DTS solution to these manufacturers machines.

Currently, DTS audio solutions on PCs only account for less than 5% of the company's income. Mr. Kirchner hopes that with DTS on board netbooks will gain the company increased revenues.

Make Some Noise For the ASUS uBoom Netbook/Notebook Speakers

Generally, while netbook speakers are good enough for moderate music and video junkies, they're not exactly top notch for cranking up the tunes for a party. ASUS, recognizing this "problem," has come out with uBoom and uBoom Qsound (uBoom Q) bar speakers for its netbooks (and notebooks).

These uBoom speakers get their power from the actual netbook and are connected via a USB port. Once plugged in, these speakers replace the internal sound with high quality enhanced audio.

The standard uBoom model offers 24W of power while the uBoom Q offers 2.4W. Weights of these two speaker models vary as well; the uBoom weighs approximately 3 kilograms while the Q weighs roughly 400 grams.

There is currently no information about pricing for these audio-enhancing speakers.

Asus Eee PC 900HA sacrifices keyboard to become a tablet PC

900ha tablet

One of the things I love about netbooks is the nearly-full sized keyboards. Try as I might, I just can't be as productive on a touchscreen-only device. I do too much typing during the day, and rely on keyboard shortcuts to get much of my work done (although the gesture support on tablets like the Gigabyte TouchNote T1028X could certainly help you emulate keyboard shortcuts). But not everyone feels the way I do about keyboards, and so every now and again someone decides to gut a netbook, remove the keyboard, and throw in a touchscreen to create a dirt cheap tablet-style UMPC.

The latest project making the rounds comes from a member of the EeeUser Forums who turned his Asus Eee PC 900HA into a tablet. The Eee PC 900HA has an 8.9 inch screen, which in this case has been modified with a touchscreen.

If you're wondering why this particular tablet has two colors, it's because it combines parts from an Asus Eee PC 900HA and a 900A. The guts of the machine are from the 900HA, which has a hard drive instead of a small solid state disk, while the screen area comes from a 900A.

Weibu N10A: Japanese netbook with NVIDIA ION graphics

weibu n10a

While dual core Intel Atom 330 processors have been making the rounds in low power nettops and other desktop computers for a while, you don't see them very often in netbooks. And while a glance at a Japanese placard for the Shenzhen Weibu N10A made it look like this might be one of the first netbooks to sport both a dual core Atom 330 CPU and NVIDIA ION graphics, it looks like there was a misprint.

CNET is reporting that the computer has a dual core processor, but CNET's source for the story, Akiba Hotline says there was a mistake, and this computer has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor.

While it would have been nice to see a dual core netbook, the Weibu N10A does have NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, which should help the little guy outperform most netbooks with integrated graphics when it comes to gaming and playing HD video. The N10A also has 1GB of RAM, a 150GB hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi and an HDMI output.

As you could probably guess by the netbook's brand name, I don't expect to see this model released in the US anytime soon. But it's also possible that a Western PC distributor could pick up the N10A and rebrand it for sale in the US or Europe.

The netbook will reportedly have a 10.1 inch display,  sell for 49,800 yen, or about $525.

I wouldn't blame you if you took one look at the picture above, and figured you were looking at an Acer Aspire D150 netbook with a 10.1 inch display. But it's actually a Suncu 12, which is an off-brand 12.1 inch laptop from China.

ASUS Seeks Netbook Eminence In Chinese Markets

ASUS Logo

Asustek hasn't seen as much star-studded success in the netbook market as competitors like HP and Acer, despite the fact that it delivers a wide variety of reliable machines to the industry. Its Eee PC 1008HA Seashell netbook even won an EISA award just days ago. However, declines in revenue and profit margins have been ushered in by an iffy economy and increased competition in North American and European markets, inspiring ASUS to fight the good fight in China more than ever before.

Chief executive Jerry Shen assured investors on Tuesday that ASUS had a plan to grow:

"We're seeing a lot of growth momentum from China, and expect to grow our market share there for the rest of the year… Eastern Europe is also growing quite well, so things should improve from now on."

A massive influx of new netbooks from no-names and franchisers haven't helped the picture for Asustek, but if the Taiwanese company puts its eggs into Chinese baskets this year then perhaps it can regain its former glory.

MSI Delivers X-Slim X600 Netbook Basher To The Team

msi-x600with-dvd

Adding the MSI X-Slim X600 to its lineup shows that MSI has decided to follow in the footsteps of a number of manufacturers in adding a netbook killer to its lineup.

At 15.6 inches the X-Slim doesn't seem to resemble a netbook at all. However, for a mere $800 ou can get this 5.5 lb notebook with a 1.4 GHz Core 2 ULV chip, ATI HD 4330 graphics, and a 1366 x 768 pixel WXGA display. It's a tempting offer for those who consider netbooks to be too weak and notebooks too expensive.

It doubles standard netbook figures in offering a 320 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM standard. Other features include a 6-cell battery, 2 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI out, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, and you've got a machine with a lot to offer in a thoroughly oversaturated market.

Bloggers Beware - Smartbook is also Patented

Do you still remember the Psion vs Intel issue regarding the use of the term "netbook?" From what I remembered, the two companies seemed to have reached an agreement and so here we still freely using the word "netbook".

Now, look who is following the path taken by Psion, a company called Smartbook who is claiming to have the trademark to the word – Smartbook. And so, Smartbook AG have sent emails to some well known sites who are using the term smartbook to promote machines being developed by other companies such as Qualcomm, Freescale and Arm.

According to the letter sent to Sascha of Netbooknews.com, his blog is harming the reputation of Smartbook AG by using the term "Smartbook."

Upon checking out the site Smartbook.de, there are actually two laptops with the branding Smartbook – Smartbook Hell and Smartbook Heaven.  These two machines are no way similar to smartbooks that we tech bloggers refer to and used to know.

Anyway, hopefully this issue gets settled fast and that no one gets hurt in the end. Smartbooks are just in their infancy and have not yet reached the same popularity achieved by netbooks for these machine to merit some conversial issues.

Sony Vaio W upgrade guide

vaio w dissected

13The Sony Vaio W is a nice looking netbook with one feature that really sets it apart from most other mini-laptops on the market: a higher resolution, 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display. The problem is that the netbook's 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU and integrated graphics have to work a bit harder to pump out graphics to every corner of the screen than they would with a lower resolution display. And that means that some lower resolution netbooks might actually feel snappier than the Vaio W.

Of course, there are ways that you can improve the performance of virtually any netbook, such as upgrading the RAM and/or replacing the hard drive with a faster model or a solid state disk. One German Vaio W owner decided to do both of those things, and sent the pictures of his minor netbook surgery to NetbookNews.de.

It looks like the hard drive upgrade process is relatively simple. Sony put a single access panel on the base of the computer. All you need to do is unscrew the access panel and then remove the hard drive by undoing 4 mounting screws.

In order to upgrade the RAm, you need to pop off the keyboard by removing 3 more screws located on the base of the netbook. Once the keyboard is off, you should see the RAM near the lower left side. Just pop out the old module and replace it with up to 2GB of RAM. There's no point in using any more memory than that, since the motherboard will only recognize up to of 2GB.

Dell Inspiron 11z price bumped to $449

When Dell launched the Inspiron 11z laptop a few weeks ago, it had a low $399 price tag, which meant you could pick up this 11.6 inch laptop with an Intel CULV processor, 1366 x 768 pixel display, GS45 integrated graphics, 2Gb of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive for about the same price as many netbooks.

But this weekend Dell tweaked the price, first raising it to $524 for a few hours before settling at $449. That's still a pretty good price for a laptop this small and light, but the sudden price change ha's left a lot of potential customers scratching their heads.

According to Laptop Magazine, a Dell salesperson indicated that the price change is because the new models have an improved WLED display. But some users are reporting that they've been told the original $399 price was a limited time promotion.

Either way, the Dell Inspiron 11z is now the same price as the Acer Aspire 1410, another 11.6 inch laptop with a CULV processor. There are some differences. The Aspire One has a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo CULV SU3500 processor while the Inspiron 11z has a 1.2GHz Intel Celeron 723 CPU. And the Acer laptop has a 6 cell, 48Whr battery while the Dell model has a 3 cell, 28WHr battery.

Rumor: Nokia Booklet 3G to retail for $799 without a contract

I'm going to put this one squarely in the rumor category for now, but Sascha of NetbookNews.de has a source who is telling him that the upcoming Nokia Booklet 3G will sell for $799 in the US. Considering the machine will reportedly pack 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, HDMI, and other features into a 2.7 pound case and provide up to 12 hours of battery life, that figure might actually be somewhat realistic. But if Nokia were actually going to charge that kind of money, I can tell you, they wouldn't sell very many of these netbooks in the US, where you can regularly get a mini-laptop with a faster processor and 8-9 hours of battery life for $400 or less.

But here's the thing: Nokia isn't a computer company, and they don't tend to sell products the same way as you'd sell computers. You don't walk into a consumer electronics store in the US, buy a Nokia cellphone, and walk out. Instead, you choose a cellphone provider and sign up for a long term service plan and either get a phone for free or pay a small fee for a phone. And my guess is that Nokia will partner with a US telecom like AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile to sell the Booklet 3G the same way.

In other words, while the base price of the netbook may be $799, you may never even have the option of paying that kind of money for it. Instead, you might be able to pick one up for a much, much lower price when you sign up for a wireless data plan that will cost you $40 to $60 a month. And if that happens, the Booklet 3G might be more competitive with netbooks from LG, Dell, HP, and Acer that are currently offered by US wireless companies.

But we'll probably know more next week when Nokia outlines more details about the Booklet 3G at the Nokia World event.
