Gigabyte Joins the Ultrabook Market

Looks like ultrabooks are the new tablets. Gigabyte is now joining the ranks of other computer manufacturers. Reports state that Gigabyte's revenue for 2011 is slowly slipping because of the struggling economy. Gigabyte will release its own Ultrabook model in the middle of 2012 or later. They maybe taking advantage of the 22-nanometer Ivy Bridge platform by Intel.

The ultrabook segment is slowly being crowded, HP and Dell recently made public their intentions in joining the fray. The anticipated metal chassis shortage might be really happening since there are lots of players wanting some piece of the pie.

Ultrabook manufacturers might have a very hard time keeping the cost down of the form factor to compete with MacBook Air and other ultraportables. After all, ultrabooks defining feature is its sub-$1000 pricing. Intel, however, is unwilling to keep the cost down of its processors.

The computer manufacturers are indeed marching forward with their Ultrabook plans. We'll have to see if how well does this segment go against Macbook Air.
