Asus and Acer Will Use Fiberglass for their Ultrabook Lines

The anticipated shortage of aluminum chassis production has Acer and Asus both thinking about using fiberglass chassis designs for their upcoming Ultrabooks.

Asus and Acer are planning to use fiberglass materials in their respective ultrabook line for chassis. This move will shave off as much as $20 off the cost of each full chassis. Apple has favorable contracts with aluminum chassis production, hence the Acer and Asus decision to use fiberglass.

Acer, at first, planned to release a fiberglass ultrabook this coming fall. However, they had to postpone it until 2012 because of "unfavorable market conditions".  We all know, Intel is not giving any ultrabook manufacturers a favor by lowering the processor price. It made the below $1000 price point.

So far, it's been tough for manufacturers to meet the strict requirements of the Ultrabook product category and then they'll be facing the MacBook Air and even the mobile-OS tablets. It is still to be seen, however, if Asus and Acer had other cost-cutting solution aside from the chassis.
