Intel PCs are going to adapt USB 3.0 as its standard. The USB Implementers Forum announced that the upcoming Ivy Bridge 7 Series of chipset, aswell as other Intel chipsets had achieved USB 3.0 certification. USB 3.0 delivers up to 10 times the data transfer rate of USB 2.0 and also much improved power efficiency.
Ivy Bridge is shipping this April-June time frame and will boast USB 3.0 as a standard feature for the first time ever. It has only been available on select laptops. Adapting USB 3.0 also bumps the price up because of the lack of volumes.
Intel offers alternative high-speed connection technology called Thunderbolt, a standard to Apple's Macbooks, but that isn't expected to be the mainstream as what would be USB 3.0 in 2012.
