Intel Courts the Small Fries

Ultrabooks will burst out of the gate this coming CES. 2012 looks like an ultrabook fanfare and now Intel is targeting smaller manufacturers. Intel plans to hold a meeting in Taipei as a matchmaker between huge manufacturers and smaller brands.

The timing is perfect because Intel's Innovation and Research Forum Showcase includes a keynote by the company's CTO Justin Rattner. If the Ultrabook is posturing to become the staple of portable computing device, it must also be supported by the regional manufacturers as much as the elite device makers.

Target ultrabook brands include Epson, Onkyo, Viewsonic, Mustek, Motion Computing, WiPro and Positivo. WiPro and Positivo may not be well known but regionally they are big players.

Intel has $300 million Ultrabook Fund for development of ultrabooks features like battery, storage and touch interface. This is the next step to ensure that this form factor would penetrate into greater heights.
