ASUS Will Release Convertible Ultrabook/Tablet Hybrid

ASUS is on the works with an ultrabook that has convertible touchscreen. This device will be launched in September 2012 in an attempt to leverage Windows 8 to take on both iPad and the MacBook Air in one single device. This notebook is expected to debut alongside Windows 8.

This is not the first time that ASUS will be dealing with convertible notebooks. In 2009, the company already experimented with this form factor but using the netbook models. The most recent model was the EEE PC T101MT, released in 2010. It mounts a touchscreen LCD panel on a swiveling hinge. The mentioned device can be used as a regular netbook but when folded flat, it can be used as a chunky slate.

The early attempts relied on low-powered Intel Atom processors and they definitely lacked the power to the tablets today. With ASUS convertible and Windows 8, this form factor might work since Windows 8 is going for a full desktop experience while being touch-friendly.

Intel has apparently been working with OEMs on a number of design ideas for convertibles that would use Ivy Bridge chips, Microsoft is known to push the touch features of Win8.  This new ASUS device is expected to appear at Computex Taipei in June 2012.
