Asus Eee PC 1225B Netbook Comes With AMD E-450 APU

Asus  has added a new such model to its Eee PC lineup, the 1225B, which is powered by an AMD Brazos E-450 APU.

This is actually AMD's most powerful E-series accelerated processing unit to be manufactured as it packs two computing cores clocked at 1.65GHz as well as a Radeon HD 6320 built-in GPU with 80 shader units. These usually run at 508MHz, but the integrated graphics core also comes with a special Turbo mode to increase the speed to 600MHz.

The rest of the Asus netbook doesn't seem to differ much from all the other Eee PC models as it also gets an 11.6-inch LED-backlit LCD panel with a resolution of 1366×768, a low-res 0.3MP webcam, wireless LAN and optional Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, as well as up to 7 hours of battery life with the 6-cell power pack.

The AMD accelerated processing unit can be paired together with a maximum of 4GB of system memory, and the storage options include a series of 2.5-inch hard drives with capacities ranging from 320GB to 750GB. The Eee PC 1225B packs three USB 2.0 ports, a multi-format card reader as well as VGA and HDMI display outputs.

The Eee PC 1225B will start at about 349 EUR, approximately $456 US, but you can get this at a lower price from some online sites.

BungBungame Launches Photon 100 Tablet Aimed for Business

The Photon 100 tablet was spotted at the FCC website a month ago. This week, the Taiwan-based developer BungBungame Technology officially launched the said tablet.

Photon 100

Photon 100 features AMD Z01 APU, Windows 7 Home Premium, a 10.1-inch multi-touch screen, 4GB DDR3 memory, 64GB SSD, and runs Windows 7. The device weighs 820 grams according to BungBungame. The tablet PC is produced by Taiwan-based Askey Computer on an OEM basis.

The motivation of BungBungame's developing Photon 100 is that many of its clients have found that the application software they need does not fit in well with hardware specifications of exiting tablet PCs. The competitiveness of Photon 100 is BungBungame's capability to offer customized application software for business users.

The company pointed out that it will launch the tablet PC in the Taiwan market at less than NT$20,000 (US$662) in February 2012 having obtained orders for 7,000-8,000 units. To compete for orders from international clients, BungBungame will showcase Photon 100 at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to take place in Las Vegas during January 10-13.

Intel Atom Powered Windows 8 Tablet Coming 2nd Half of 2012

Intel shipped Cedar Trail powered netbooks last week, now it's time for speculation time on when is their next generation of processors are going to be released. As of this moment, the Oak Trail tablets are struggling in the market because of its thick profile, heat issues and horrible battery life.

Medfield tablets and smartphones are going to be available in the first half of 2012. In the second half of 2012, we are then going to see Windows 8 tablets with Clover Trail W processors. Clover Trail W is meant to be a successor to Medfield.

We first saw Intel demo a Moorsetown smartphone at CES 2010, so it has been a long time for Intel to join the smartphone/tablet fray. The above roadmap hints that another generation of Atom processors are going to be released at the second half of 2012.

Acer Aspire One D270: A Netbook with Intel Cedar Trail

Many were disappointed a few months earlier when it was announced that the launch of the much awaited Intel Cedar Trail was moved to 2012.  The delay was rumored to be caused by some graphics driver issues in the platform and that it has not yet passed certification for Windows 7. The Cedar Trail is Intel's latest Atom processor, built upon a dual 32nm core.

The Acer Aspire One D270 (AOD270) is a 10.1-incher, which is said to be running 1.6GHz Atom N2600 processor. The AOD270 is also believed to be equipped with 1GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. It will be available with either a three-cell or six-cell battery.

Pricing for a new Intel Cedar Trail-based Acer netbook AOD270 have popped up in Europe as follows:

  • 250 euros ($324 USD) for the three cell model
  • 269 euros ($348 USD) for the six-cell version

Lenovo Teases Ideapad S110 Netbook

Many industry observers are scoffing at netbooks because of tablets and now ultrabooks. Now Intel starts shipping Cedar Trail chips and this could give the form factor a sort of revival. Lenovo calls the IdeaPad S110 as a "mini notebook" to distance itself from apparently a PR nightmare category: netbook. The N2600 Cedar Trail chip comes courtesy of two online retailers with specs that include a gig of RAM and an HD of 320GB. The machine is about 16mm thick, weighing at 1.15kg, USB 3.0, 10.1-inch HD screen and an optional 720p webcam as well as 3G connectivity. The S110 joins the Asus Eee PC 1025 and two upcoming Samsung netbooks on the Cedar Trail-tooting devices.

The new chipset and its graphical improvements will be a big leap from its previous generation. Pricing of this netbook is at $330 but Lenovo intends to sell this model at $299.

NajmTek Dual-Screen U-Book to Launch at CES 2012

It seems that another company is prospecting to be the next Acer Iconia in the coming CES 2012. To give you some past overview, last CES 2011, Acer Iconia, a dual-screen Windows 7 laptop was the winner or the top picked device on the Last Gadget Standing night. Apparently, NajmTek is suspecting to have plans in launching a similar device from Acer in the form of the U-book or the Universal Notebook in the world's upcoming largest consumer technology tradeshow. It is said to be a desktop stand-in machine that differs from a laptop, netbook or tablet PC either.

The U-book will possess a dual-screen feature and a keyboard touchscreen. What more interesting with this device is that the keyboard is perfectly customizable and unique depending on your desired preference. With this, users might love to design different layouts that will please their personalities as well.

However, final word is lacking. Thus, consumers should stay tuned at CES 2012 for more exciting details.

Turn Your Old Netbook into a Portable Security System

Xexxon Technologies It's time to reach to your old dusty netbook off the shelves: at least we can't just wish off our lovely netbooks just yet; Xexxon Technologies founder Colin Adamson, has something on the offering – the Oculus Telepresence Robot, an extraordinary interlock of personal robotics, low-priced gadgetry with wireless Internet surveillance capability that can be run by just about any iOS device, tablet, or computer.

Most surveillance systems these days are fixed — if you want to get surveillance in every room it would force you to install more units around. As a substitute to this hindrance is the Oculus Telepresence unit that simply assembles your webcam-outfitted netbook for patrol duty.

Setting it up is very easy — users would just need to place their 11-inch netbook on an adjustable stand and have the open-source control software installed on a different PC.  The software is compatible with Windows (7, XP, Vista,) operating systems, Android and iOS. Then the Arduino micro-controller lets the netbook's webcam periscope to slant, well you may not be in a position to do much to stop those intruders once they get into your staff, but you'll be able to see that roommate who always goes into your staff.

Intel still Leads the Microprocessor Business in Q3

INTELIntel is set to increase its lead over its competitors despite a fall in sales of its Atom chips intended for the moribund netbook business, Intel Corp in the Q3 managed to widen its control position in the international microprocessor market on the muscle of its corporate sales.

Intel in the Q3 made about 83.7 percent of worldwide microprocessor sales, an increase of 1.2% points compared to 82.5% it held in the Q2 of 2011, in line with the latest IHS iSuppli Computer Systems research from data and analysis source IHS.  Intel widened its lead over No. 2 microprocessor provider Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to 73.5 % points in the Q3, up from 72% in the Q2.

Market Share

In the Q3 Intel's performance was as result of a mix of negative and positive growths in regard to the transformative blow of media tablets on the PC market.

Net decrease for Netbooks

Following a successful double-digit sales growth in2008 through 2010, the netbook market assumed a sudden drop in 2011 as consumers bowed towards media PC tablets. Worldwide netbook sales are set to further plunge to 21.4 million pieces in 2011, losing 33.5% compared to 32 million units realized in 2010. Sales are estimated to continue to decline in the coming years and in fact, shipments will decline to 13.4 million by 2015.

This of course has contributed to downside for Intel, where most of netbook PCs in the market were powered by its Atom microprocessors. Intel confirmed its chipset and Atom microprocessor revenue in the Q3 decreased to 32% in contrast to the previous year.

Up in the Cloud

Nevertheless Intel saw a continued growth in the Q3 emerging from shipments of microprocessors that are used in data centers due to the rising demand for cloud computing services and the mobile markets.

Today, cloud computing business is on the route into the stratosphere as providers seek to provide services designed to serve smartphones tablet PCs, and other portable devices. Enterprise and consumer spending on the open segment of the cloud is estimated to experience growths of up to $110 billion in 2015, up compared to $23 billion in 2010.

Intel also confirmed that it gained from firm notebook sales coming from the corporate market, which remains to perform well despite amid challenging conditions in the consumer computer segment.

Acer Has No Plans to Quit the Tablet PC

Stan Shih, Acer founder, expects its tablet business to stay. In response to the rumor that the company will withdraw from the tablet PC and smartphone markets, Shih said that although Acer's tablet operation has not performed well, it is not time to give up the business. As per Digitimes' interview with Shih, "experiencing frustration is an unavoidable the process, just like Acer's encountering troubles when it entered the notebook market."

Acer's board of directors has discussed the company's product development and streamlining its corporate organization, and has consented to strategies of simplifying operational goals through focusing on profitable products, Shih indicated.

Shih further explained that a simplified organization is expected to increase operation efficiency, reduce conflicts in product development and consolidate resources for developing niche and competitive products. This is considering the much overlapped development of tablet PC and smartphones.

Acer has clarified the rumor by stating that Acer has no plans to quit the tablet PC and smartphone business operations or downsize related personnel. The company will, on the other hand, make optimal adjustments to decrease the number of product models for selective and strategic input of operational resources. If this strategy turns out to be a success, Acer may even expand tablet PC and smartphone business operations.

Google: Android Sales is Declining

"There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day," Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google confirmed this week via Twitter.

700,000 maybe a big number, but not for Google.

Google: Android sales slowing. Google, Android, Phones, Tablets 0

700,000 actually shows that Android activations are slowing rather than growing based on previous information from Google. Way back in June, Rubin  tweeted that Google was activating 500,000 devices a day "and it's growing at 4.4% w/w".

That means Android has added 200,000 activations per day since June, which is equal to only a growth of around 1.4% a day. This is considerably lower than the 4.4% Google was aiming for. If Kindle Fire activations are included in this data, then that could mean worse for Google.
