The consumer preview of Windows 8 is already out. You might be wondering if it would run on netbooks smoothly, not just your current netbooks, but the old first-gen netbooks. The consumer preview was tested on the Asus Eee PC 1000H. This netbook was released back in 2008 and its specs include 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and GMA 950 graphics in a 10-inch form factor with 1024×600 pixel resolution. Even with this outrageously dated specs, the consumer preview is snappy.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview requires your system to have at least 1 GHz processor, a gig of RAM and 16GB of storage space.
Of course, there are problems running the consumer preview on such "old" machines. Windows 8 requires 1366×768 for optimal experience. You just can't access the Windows store to download apps for the Metro style user interface unless you have 1024×768 or better.
There's a workaround though. You can download a Windows 7 graphics driver from Intel. By that measure, you could persuade the OS that you have a 1024×768 display.
You could actually set the netbook without the capabilities of higher resolution to 1024×768 and even 1152×864. However, don't expect everything to be beautiful. Some texts would look funky and images absurd. You can access the Windows Store though with this work around. You need the 1366×768 pixel for windows snapping though.
This means that the minimum resolution requirement would force netbook, tablet and other machines to pony up the resolution in order to cater for the Windows 8 OS.
