Companies like Quanta Computer, Wistron, Pegatron Technology, Inventec, and Compal Electronics, all suffered declines in product shipment this January. These companies are all original design manufacturers (ODMS) and occupy the top tiers in the industry.
For its part, Quanta Computer shipped only 3.8 million units, dropping 10% from their previous sales record. Wistron was able to sell 2.5 million units, indicating a decrease of 2%.
Pegatron recorded 1.1 million units, which means it dropped 4%. Inventec sold 1.2 million units, dropping 11%. Meanwhile, Compal was able to ship 2.4 units, dropping 9%.
These disappointments could mean that laptop makers should not be too optimistic about orders because the trend is expected to continue through the first quarter of the year. Original design manufacturers such as the companies mentioned may be cautioned then against very optimistic projections.
This is despite expectations that there would be a greater demand for the devices in the second half of 2012.
The low demand for laptops could be due to a number of factors, including shortages in hard disk drive supplies, and weak economies in the US and Europe. These companies also allegedly overestimated their targets and are thus facing disappointment.
Nonetheless, it is normal for the sales to decline during this period, although this year's decline is more than the average 9 percent after the holiday season.
