The new Blackberry PlayBook 2.0 was unveiled by Research in Motion in this year's CES at Las Vegas. The new Playbook is expected to be available around the middle of February.
This update has been long-awaited by fans of the previous version of the tablet which became available in spring of 2011. The new update features BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps, a special functionality that allows users of the tablet to use Android 2.3.3 platform apps.
With an intention to move over the new heights of App World, RIM opted to offer free BlackBerry Playbook tablets to Android developers, as announced by the VP of the company, Alec Saunders.
However, for this to work, interested developers need first to register for a vendor account, then convert their Android apps to a file format called BAR.
BAR is the format compatible for an app to run on the tablet's operating system. On the official website, several tools to help developers do this are available, such as the Eclipse Plug-in repackaging tool, Online Packager, and Command-line repackaging tools. For the new model, developers may submit their apps until February 13th.
The new Playbook is also expected to have a native e-mail client. This e-mail client has a number of features, like a contact app powered by Gist.
This e-mail app has a standard look, with a preview window and a list of messages. Integrated with it also is a calendar.
