Notebook Shipments Anticipated to Grow in the 2nd Half of 2012

A significant rise in notebook shipments is expected during the second half of 2012. The proportion, when the two halves are compared is expected to be 40-45% to 55-60%.

Several factors are predicted to cause the increase. Among these is the release of Windows 8, the newest version of the popular operating System, which will introduce many changes from the current Windows 7, including the much-talked-about Metro user interface.

Also expected to boost sales is the new 22 nm Ivy Bridge platform from Intel. This series will have 25 different models, 17 of which will be for desktop computers and the remaining ones for notebooks and ultrabooks.

This chip boasts of Tri-gate or 3D transistor technology (meaning less than 50 percent energy consumption vis-à-vis 2D transistors) better graphics through built-in GPU, support for HD viewing with Intel HD Graphics, and Multiple 4K video playback, and Intel Quick Sync Video, among others.

These are big improvements when compared to the Sandy Bridge, and will likely attract many consumers to products carrying this chip. There is also going to be a recovery from the hard drive shortage that will occur in the first half of the year. This implies that more units will be sold possibly during the second half.

All these factors are expected to contribute to the growing notebook industry, with predictions being set on a two-digit growth.
