Expect ARM-based Laptops Next Year Says Acer

Acer AC700

Windows 8 is being planned to be released next year. This Windows version is the first operating system for desktops that will support ARM-powered chips along with its support to Intel, AMD and others' x86 processors. This could lead to netbooks, or even very low power laptops to use ARM processors that will enhance the battery life while being budget friendly.

Still, the decision is still up to PC makers. Will they decide to use ARM-based laptops? Acer was rumored that they could launced ARM-based laptops as early as July, obviously it didn't happen. Now Acer is telling that ARM-based laptops can only be expected once Windows 8 is released. A PC maker could release an ARM-based laptop line with Chrome OS or Linux, since Windows 7 does not support ARM. So far, no Chromebook was ever released without Intel's involvement.

Rumors suggested that the first ARMbook would have an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, however if take Acer's words, that would be around Q1 next year. By that time NVIDIA Kal-El processor is likely to be the de facto processor for the ARMbooks.
