While the rest of the computer industry was busy cranking out inexpensive 10 inch netbooks with low power Intel Atom processors, Apple took another approach and launched the MacBook Air — a laptop that's even lighter than a typical netbook, but which offers a larger, higher resolution display and a much more powerful processor.
Unfortunately at launch the MacBook Air also had a much higher price tag than any netbook, with a starting price of about $999. Now Apple has started selling refurbished last-generation models for $699. You could still get two netbooks for that price, but you get a lot more machine with the MacBook Air, and this is the lowest price I've seen to date.
