Cedar Trail Will Decode HD Videos in Your Netbooks

Cedar Trail video playback

The next generation of Atom processor is bound to be released at the tailend of this year. The Cedar Trail chips will not provide much more raw power than its older brother, the Pine Trail chips. Good news is Pine Trail chips will offer significant boost in graphics performance. The Cedar Trail platform supports 1080pHD video playback and Blu-ray decoding because of its GMA 3600 graphics core with PowerVR technology. The Atom n570 didn't feature hardware acceleration for its HD video playback. Meaning, the processors are heavily taxed during HD playbacks. The GMA 3600 graphics core is made to handle this HD decoding as opposed to relying on the CPUs to do it for the system. It is worth noting that the Cedar Trail can decode a b Blu-ray disc with H.264 video with DTS-HD audio with the CPU load maintaining 20% usage.

The Oak Trail and Menlow chips already integrated HD video capable video solution, the GMA 600 and the GMA 500, respectively. These chips, however, are slower since they are installed in tablets and fanless computers. However, Cedar Trail won't offer video encoding hardware support.
