More newspaper tablets on the way, thanks to TigerDirect and Archos?

Arnova 10 G2 PubTab

We could soon see more newspaper publishers offering Android tablets to digital news subscribers. TigerDirect and Archos rolled out a new program called PubTab this week that will allow publishers to customize the software on an inexpensive 10 inch Android tablet that can be bundled with a subscription package.

If that all sounds kind of familiar, it's because this is the program that launched this month in Philadelphia. A pilot program is being run by Philadelphia Media Network, allowing customers to pick up an Archos 10 G2 tablet for as little as $99 when they sign up for subscriptions to three digital news applications.

The Archos 10 G2 features a 1024 x 600 pixel capacitive touchscreen display and a 1 GHz single core processor. It runs Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has a camera and 4GB of storage. It recently went on sale for $200, so you the Philadelphia newspaper version is about half price for subscribers.

Out of the box, the tablet doesn't include the Google Android Market, run the latest tablet-optimized version of Android, or have the fastest processor around. But it's pretty cheap as a $200 tablet.. and even cheaper if you bundle it with a newspaper subscription — assuming you were planning on spending money on a newspaper anyway.

It would be nice to see TigerDirect sign up a few other partners to provide customized tablets with better software, better build quality, or better specifications. But for now it looks like this is a TigerDirect/Archos collaboration, and I suspect that means we'll soon see the Arnova 10 G2 tablet pop up in other newspaper circulation areas soon.

WinToFlash: Install Windows XP, Vista, 7, or Windows 8 with a USB flash drive

WinToFlash

For the last 15 years or so, Microsoft Windows has been coming on CDs or DVDs. But it's increasingly common to find computers that don't have disc drives. So how do you install Windows on those computers?

Microsoft offers a free USB/DVD tool which you can use to easily create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 7 or Windows 8. But if you want to go a little more old-school, the best solution I've found for installing Windows XP with a USB flash drive is an app called WinToFlash.

WinToFlash has been around for a few years, and makes the process of copying the installation files from your Windows disc to a flash drive pretty simple. You can check out our step-by-step guide for more details.

While WinToFlash was originally designed for Windows XP, the developer released a major update earlier this year that added support for Windows 7. Then he added support for Windows 8. It also works with Vista, Windows 2003 Server, and Windows 2008 Server. In other words, WinToFlash does everything Microsoft's official tool can do… and more.

This month a new version was also released which fixed a few bugs affecting the Windows 8 Developer Preview and installation of Microsoft Office 2007 on computers that have used WinToFlash to install Windows.

Since Microsoft isn't likely to release a USB tool for installing Windows XP anytime soon, WinToFlash is probably the best option for anyone still looking to install Microsoft's 10-year-old operating system on a newer computer. The app also offers options that you won't find in Microsoft's USB/DVD tool, so it could also come in handy if you're looking for a way to install Windows 7 or 8 on a computer.

Asus Eee PC 1025C hits the FCC (gets torn to pieces in the process)

The Asus Eee PC 1025C is a 10 inch netbook that's expected to be one of the first mini-laptops to sports a new Intel Atom Cedar Trail processor. It's due to launch any day now, so it's not surprising that the tablet popped up at the FCC this week.

The fine folks at the FCC were kind enough to provide a user manual as well as a series of photographs. There aren't any big surprises in the manual. The laptop will have a screen, touchpad and keyboard… just like every other netbook on the market. But the photos include a few shots of the Eee PC 1025C without its cover, so you can take a look at the wireless card, motherboard, and other components.

There are also a few photos of the power adapter — it looks like Asus has done away with the bulky power brick and separate adapter cable for this model. Instead you have a single-piece power adapter which almost looks like something you'd get with a smartphone rather than a laptop.

This won't the first Asus netbook to come with this sort of charger — the original 7 inch Asus Eee PC 701 netbook had a similar cable. It typically takes longer to charge a laptop using this sort of solution, but since Intel's Cedar Trail chips should use less platform than most older netbook chips, the new charger may be able to provide enough juice.

According to Asus, the Eee PC 1025C should get up to 14 hous of battery life. It will support HDMI output and feature 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and USB 3.0. The model on display at the FCC has a white lid, but we also expect to see blue and pink models.

Meego's Dead, Replaced By Tizen

Meego's going gone. The LiMo Foundation and The Linux Foundation have announced that a new open source project called Tizen to be developed as a Linux-based device platform. Intel plans to move the developers of Meego to Tizen. According to the Tizen website:

According to the Tizen website:

The Tizen software platform, a mobile and device operating system based on Linux and other popular upstream projects. Tizen will support multiple device categories, such as smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks, and in-vehicle infotainment devices. The Linux Foundation will host the project, where Tizen development will be completely open and led by a technical steering team composed of Intel and Samsung.

After Samsung announced that they are going to let Bada go open source, it isn't surprise that Samsung will team up with Intel to sponsor the Tizen OS. Samsung wrote in their blog:

Why not just evolve MeeGo? We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5. Shifting to HTML5 doesn't just mean slapping a web runtime on an existing Linux, even one aimed at mobile, as MeeGo has been. Emphasizing HTML5 means that APIs not visible to HTML5 programmers need not be as rigid, and can evolve with platform technology and can vary by market segment.

There are so many dedicated Qt developers that everyone is anxious to hear if Tizen will be based on mobile devices. There are already a few netbooks running Meego available market. The news is not detailed enough to draw conclusions so watch out for more updates.

Asus eee pc 1008ha

ASUS' newest netbook,  Eee PC 1008HA,
 features  an all-new chassis inspired
by the natural curves of a seashell.
 ASUS has created some nice-looking
 netbooks, including its Swarovski-
studded Eee PC S101, but the Eee PC
1008HA takes a more subtle approach.
The system overall sports a sharp and
clean design, largely a result of the
curved panels that extend over its
edges and hide the ports.  The glossy
 black lid (also available in white;
blue and pink will come later this
year) is covered in a new Infusion
finish that allows the 1008HA to be
scratch resistant; but it's far from
 fingerprint resistant. The 1008HA is
thinner than most other laptops in
 its class measuring 10.3 x 7 x 1.0
inches. All of the ports on the
1008HA are covered with plastic tabs,
giving this netbook its uniform look
. Despite its size and dimensions it
 packs a comfortable and spacious
 keyboard. Unlike the island keyboard
of the 1000HE, there are no spaces
between the raised black matte keys
which was found to be pretty flat.
ASUS keeps the correctly placed keys
it mended with the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE.
The right Shift key is full size and
directly below the Enter key. A Wi-Fi
and touchpad on/off buttons sits above
the keyboard. The trackpad on this
netbook is pretty different from the
rest. Blending in with system's deck,
the 2.5 x 1.5-inch pad is covered with
 small braille-like dots. Unlike most
netbooks, the pad had very little
 friction, and navigating the desktop
 didn't require much backtracking. As
with other Eee PCs, the touchpad also
 supports multitouch gestures; using
two fingers to pinch the pad and zoom
in on a picture was easy, and the
image quickly rendered in its new size.
The single mouse button was comfortable
 for making selections, although we
prefer the 1000HE's dedicated right and
left buttons. The screen is pretty
 impressive with the 10.1-inch,
1024 x 600-pixel resolution backlit LED
display and thus it allows the web pages
and windows to fit to size on the screen.
From afar, the inch-thick glossy black
bezel looked as if the screen was flush
with the frame, though on a closer
inspection one can easily notice the
upright frame. Above the display, a 1.3
-megapixel Webcam provided extremely clear
images in a Skype video chat. The speakers
located at the bottom front edge of the
system allowed us to hear his voice loud
and clear from across the room.  As far
as performance is concerned   with the
same 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N280 processor,
1GB of RAM, and Windows XP as the ASUS
Eee PC 1000HE, not much of a change in
everyday performance or benchmarks on the
 1008HA Seashell can be seen.

How to use Jupiter with Ubuntu 11.10 to control netbook power features

Jupiter

The Jupiter applet for Linux has offers netbook users a way to control the clock speed of Intel Atom chips and some other advanced features. Jupiter has been available for a few years, but up until recently there was no easy way to use Jupiter with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

That's not a huge surprise, since Ubuntu 11.10 won't officially launch until October, but beta versions of the popular Linux distribution have been available for a while. Now the folks at WebUpd8 have put together instructions for installing a hacked version of Jupiter that supports Oneiric Ocelot.

Basically you need to download the special version of Jupiter from the WebUpd8 repository, install a custom Eee utility if you're using an Asus netbook, and you should be good to go.

Once installed, you can use Jupiter to change the clock speed of an Intel Atom processor to adjust for "power saving," "high performance" or "maximum performance" modes. High performance is basically the default clock speed, while power saving underclocks the processor a bit to offer better battery life and maximum overclocks it by a small amount to give you a tiny performance boost.

Jupiter also gives you quick access to other settings including the screen orientation, screen resolution, and wireless options for many netbooks.

Asus and Acer decide to join Tizen project, HTC still on the fence

With Nokia's defection and Intel's relative silence regarding the subject, you might think that you've already seen the last of the MeeGo operating system. Well, perhaps, but Intel is keeping MeeGo alive in cooperation with Samsung in a new Linux-based open-source mobile OS initiative called the Tizen project. A post on the official Tizen web site says that it is a new platform intended for use in a number of different ways such as in smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment devices. Since it was announced only yesterday, Tizen is currently still picking up steam. So far, Intel and Samsung are onboard, and a report on DigiTimes says that it has already won support from the likes of SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo, and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

At the same time, it is said that Asus and Acer are also coming on board, to add development to this new fledgling OS. HTC is undecided. This new alliance of tech giants will have to go through a lot of hoops in order to surpass the success of current mainstream options like iOS and Android in the mobile space, but perhaps it will find better luck in other sectors of the consumer electronics market. For Asus, working on Tizen would probably be just like putting out a new netbook that runs MeeGo instead of Windows or Linux.

Toshiba unveils new TransferJet Wireless chip

Toshiba has successfully developed a new type of wireless chip that will enable devices to communicate with each other and transfer data at close range with maximum speeds of up to 560 Mbit/s. Toshiba's new chip is called the TransferJet wireless chip, and it is something that the Japanese company hopes will be implemented in new consumer electronics devices coming out next year such as tablet PCs, smartphones, and perhaps even netbooks, too. Toshiba plans to ship samples of its TC35420 chip some time in early 2012, and if it lucks out then perhaps we just might see a new alternative to Infrared on some new smartphones, tablets or netbooks next year.

Intel, RCom and Asus announces MeeGo-based eee PC X101H Netbook in India

Asus-Eee-PC-X101

Asus collaborates with Intel and RCom to unveil the eee PC 101H netbook in India at a slashed cost of Rs 9,999. Previously we had introduced the MeeGo-packing ASUS Eee PC X101; we confirmed that its brother, the X101H accompanying Windows 7 onboard would also be available. Although it had also made its way through the FCC, the 10.1-inch netbook powered by Intel's MeeGo OS that will be reserved for the market in the Asian country will come bundled with RCom's NetConnect USB modem. Of course, this was intended to accelerate broadband penetration using the PC as a growth engine. Consumers will however have to pay in advance amount of Rs 12,499 which later they will qualify for monthly discounts amounting to Rs 2,500 on their RCom modem bill stretched over a few months. Intel also alleged working together with ASUS to make entry level Netbooks intended for the first time shoppers, students and consumers on the go.

Housing the same speck sheet as previously reviewed; the 101H uses Intel Atom processor (1.66GHz), 2.5-inch 250GB SATA hard drive and 1GB of DDR RAM. Thanks to Asus' pre-installed app store, users can now download apps directly for MeeGo. It also accompanies DropBox with access online storage of 2GB and Open Office. We are not really enthused with its 3-cell battery, which Asus puts its battery life at 4 hours. And in India, we can't  really be sure how users will welcome MeeGo OS as compared  to what many are used to – Microsoft's operating system. Asus also didn't include Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition of the netbook. Who knows, maybe they have their calculations right, all we can say is good luck to the Netbook!

Asus to launch UX series ultrabooks October 11th

Asus UX ultrabook launch

An ultrabook is a thin and light laptop which weighs less than three pounds, measures less than 0.8 inches thick, and has a starting price of under $1000. Intel coined the term this summer and also wants ultrabooks to have solid state disks and the latest Intel processors, although not every manufacturer seems to be on board with the price or SSD requirements.

In May, Asus was the first company to show off its ultrabook prototypes – and now the company is set to be one of the first to bring its ultrabooks to market. Asus will hold a launch event in New York on October 11th.

We already know about at least two models: The 11.6 inch Asus UX21 and the 13.3 inch Asus UX31. The smaller model will measure just 0.67 inches thick, weigh 2.4 pounds, and have a choice of an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor. It will have a 1366 x 768 pixel display.

The last we'd heard, the UX31 will have a 13.3 inch, 1600 x 900 pixel display and an Intel Core i7 processor. It's expected to weigh 2.9 pounds.

I suspect those early specifications may be subject to change, so I wouldn't be shocked if the screen resolution, processor options, or other features are a little different come October 11th.

But it's also possible that Asus could flesh out its ultrabook lineup with a few additional models. This summer there were reports that Asus would actually launch at least 5 different ultrabook models in October.

That doesn't necessarily mean we'll see 5 radically different devices though. Asus tends to assign different model numbers to products that have moderately different features. For instance, two virtually identical netbooks could have different model numbers if one has Bluetooth and a 6 cell battery while its sibling is WiFi-only and has a 3 cell battery.

Motorola's upcoming 8, 10 inch tablets break cover

Motorola XOOM 2 tablets

Motorola might need to hire a roofer, because the company seems to have a few leaks at the moment. This weekend the folks at Droid Life, The Verge and Engadget have been one-upping each other left and right with photos and details about two upcoming tablets from the big M.

  1. Droid Life – first pictures
  2. The Verge – 10 inch tablet specs
  3. The Verge – Oh yeah, there's an 8 inch model too
  4. Engadget – Hey would you like some photos?
  5. Engadget – How about a few more?

The Motorola XOOM was the first tablet to feature Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb when it launched in February. But it's starting to look a bit… mundane now that Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, and other companies also have 10 inch Honeycomb tablets with dual core processors and 1280 x 800 pixel displays.

So it looks like Motorola's next entries into the tablet space will provide a little something different. We still don't have any specific details on the processors, but it appears that one of Motorola's new tablets will have an 8.2 inch display while the other will have a 10.1 inch screen.

Both tablets will measure about 9mm thick, run Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb. They'll each have 5MP rear-facing cameras and IR remote control features. They'll also reportedly both offer 4G LTE mobile broadband options.

The 10 inch tablet will reportedly have an 11 hour battery, 1080p HD video recording capabilities, and a 1.2 GHz dual core processor.

The 8.2 inch version will apparently be called the XOOM 2 Media Edition and weigh about 0.95 pounds.

Motorola Xoom 2 Now Coming

Motorola has been leaking everything about their tablets right now. Remember this? Apparently, this is Motorola's full-fledged sequel to the Xoom: The Xoom 2. Aside from that it will be joined by the a smaller version called the Xoom 2 Media Edition. The Media Edition has an 8.2-inch HD IPS display. It has anti-glare coating and weigh around 0.95 pounds and can easily be held in just one hand. This device is not just portable but also durable by design . The chassis is made of magnesium and aluminum. It also features Gorilla Grass display and is splash proof. This device is aiming to be an ereader replacement but with included home entertainment because of its integrated IR remote and subwoofer.

Motorola is also preparing for a smaller tablet and will likely be available soon. Verizon is also poised to sign the similarly-sized Motorola device.
