Linux computer builders System76 have added a new netbook to their lineup. The System76 Starling EduBook is basically a rebadged Intel Classmate PC with a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor.
But while most Classmate PC models are sold with Windows XP or Windows 7, the Starling EduBook will ship with Ubuntu 10.04 Education Edition Netbook Remix.
The netbook will begin shipping in May, but it's available for pre-order today. Because it ships with Linux instead of Windows, it's not bound by Microsoft's hardware constraints for netbooks. So while the base model costs $399 and ships with 1GB of RAM, you can spend some extra cash to upgrade to 2GB of memory — although to be honest, it's probably cheaper to upgrade yourself instead of paying $69 for a 2GB SODIMM from System76.
For some reason, the Starling EduBook is only available with a 160GB hard drive though.
Rounding out the specs are 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, 3 USB ports, VGA output, mic and headphone jacks, an SD card reader, a 0.3MP webcam, and a 6 cell battery. The netbook measurs 10″ x 8″ x 1.5″ and measures 2.8 pounds. It has a semi-ruggedized design and is built for students. it even comes with a detachable handle, allowing you to easily carry around the netbook without throwing it in a bag.
If you don't need all the special education features, System76 also offers the Starling NetBook for $359. This model is a bit thinner and lighter and ships with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and a 1.6GHz INtel Atom N270 CPU. It comes standard with 2GB of RAM and 802.11b/g/ WiFi.
