Acer has reportedly placed orders for NVIDIA's Ion 2-based chips which are designed to support Intel's upcoming Pineview platform processors including the Atom N450, among others. This is according to sources from PC makers being cited by DigiTimes, in a report where it also states that Acer has placed orders for Tiger Point-based chips on NVIDIA as well.
Intel's Pine Trail-M for netbook and Pine Trail-D for nettop platforms move conventional northbridge functions (memory controller and IGP) to the CPU itself, so Ion 2 is expected to act more like a discrete GPU in this case if and when it comes out. It is also said that aside from Intel, NVIDIA is also working on support for VIA Technologies platforms.
