Somehow, we all know that netbooks tend to get a bit warm. This post from Consumerist is startling, though, which described the experience of Hannah after she unplugged it from its charger. She said there was a loud popping sound and then the room was filled with smoke with the netbook still hissing. It left a large scorch mark on her floor where she placed it and a large hole on the battery.
There's a lot of speculation that it was a defective battery, the part that often causes laptops to suddenly spontaneously combust. Dell quickly sent a replacement and upgraded unit and asked Hannah to ship the laptop back to them for further inspection. The company doesn't have any comment yet as to the cause of the malfunction.
I'm glad she didn't get hurt while using the netbook and I think it would be wise for you readers to check your netbooks for any problems right now so that the same thing doesn't happen to you.
