New MacBook Air SMC Update Brought by Apple

Apple has announced several software updates to the new Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. One of these is a MacBook Air System Management Controller or SMC Update.

This update introduces support for Power Nap for those who have OS X 10.8 or newer versions. Also, there are several enhancements for those who have a device running OS X 10.7.4.

The Power Nap feature allows the computer to keep performing tasks even while it is on sleep mode. This feature was announced during the WWDC event this year.

Power Nap, which was officially introduced at WWDC 2012, provides Mac computers with the possibility to continue to perform various tasks while sleeping. For instance, computers can still get email, stream photos, receive and updates to notes, the calendar, and contacts that were done using other Apple devices. Furthermore, it allows one to find a missing Mac Notebook or back up files. All these tasks are performed in silence and without the use of lights, allowing the notebook to save on energy.

Apple has made available two flavors of the update. Version 1.5 is for the MacBook Air laptops that were released around the middle of this year. On the other hand, those who have Mac Book Airs launched in mid 2011 and have OS X 10.8, they can download version 1.6 of the SMC update.

The update files 1.5 and 1.6 may be downloaded online.
