Microsoft Surface Tablet to Cost Between $1000 and $2000?

Microsoft might price its forthcoming Surface tablet between US$1,000 and US$2,000 despite earlier speculation that Microsoft will settle for a lower price to allow it compete with other tablets.

A Swedish website already has published prices for the four upcoming tablets. Among them, the cheapest one is priced at 6,990 kroner, or around US$1,002. Meanwhile, the most expensive of the lot is retailing for 14,990 kroner or around US$2,150. Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro tablets are both included in the pricelist.

That said, the cost of living in Sweden is a bit high, so the price of the tablet might have soared because of that factor. On the other hand, the iPad is also relatively inexpensive in the same country, retailing for 5,395 kroner or only US$773 for the least expensive model, and 7,195 kroner or US$1,032 for the costliest one.

In interviews, Microsoft does not specify the expected selling price of the tablets, but has hinted that its price will be around the prices of an ARM tablet or an Intel ultrabook with similar specifications. Therefore, the price of the Windows RT would be somewhat around US$500 whereas the Pro tablet would probably cost more than US$1,000.

With all the tablets, and even tablet-notebook hybrids out in the market that may be compared to the Surface, Microsoft would have to be wise with its pricing or it could well suffer in terms of sales.
