Samsung Merges Bada With Tizen

Samsung has revealed its plans to merge the Bada OS with Intel's Tizen, known as MeeGo, not so long ago. There were rumors circulating last year that Samsung is going to send Bada into the open source space. Yet, Samsung is very vocal about not having plans in merging its OS even though it has partnered with Tizen.

Bada is not actually an operating system at the strictest sense, it's a middleware. Bada is an application framework.

The goal of this partnership is to have Tizen support mobile apps written for Bada. The support includes backwards compatibility with published Bada apps.

Bada and Tizen developers will be provided with the same software tools (SDKs and APIs) after the integration. The idea behind is, if developers know how to create in Bada, then they won't have problems making apps for Tizen.

Samsung is still deciding how exactly to utilize bada and Tizen in upcoming products. Kang said Bada will probably be deployed in Samsung's lower-powered phones, such as those that run on a single-core processor. Bada could also come to non-phone devices; "We haven't ruled that out," Kang said. Tizen is better suited for higher-powered devices that don't run on Android or Windows Phone, he said.

Bada/Tizen could eventually power a lot of Samsung products, but the transition will take time. Kang said Tizen will probably find its way to "at least one to two" Samsung devices this year. "Tizen will not become Samsung's main operating platform anytime soon," he added.

Tizen itself has gone through different progressions with more than one partner, last year Nokia severed its ties with the OS through a one-sided announcement. If this new partnership remains intact, then at least one or two Samsung handsets or products with such OS.
