MSI outlines plans for Windows, Android tablets

MSI has announced that it will showcase two new Android tablets at CES next week. Both have 10.1 inch displays, but while one has an ARM-based CPU and runs Google Android, the other is a Windows tablet with an x86 processor.

The Android model is called the MSI WindPad 100A and it will feature a 10.1 inch multitouch display, a digital compass, GPS, G-Sensor, and ALS light sensor. It will ship standard with WiFi, but a 3G option will also be available. MSI says the WindPad 100A can run for 8 to 10 hours on a charge, and measures just 0.55 inches at its thinnest point while weighing under 1.8 pounds.

The MSI WindPad 100W will ship with Windows 7 Home Premium. This model has a 32GB solid state disk, a G-Sensor, light sensor, and WiFi. It will run MSI's Wind Touch software, which is designed to make launching applications on a touchscreen tablet a bit easier — although this sort of Windows tablet overlay can be hit or miss.

MSI's press release doesn't mention detailed specs for the different WindPad models, but the folks at Netbook News got to check out the Windows version at an event in Taiwan. They say the computer uses an Intel Atom Z530 processor and has HDMI output, a SIM card slot, 2 USB ports, and a 4-in-1 card reader. Netbook News says MSI plans to release an updated model with an Intel Atom Oak Trail processor in March. An Android tablet with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Android Honeycomb is due out in April or May.

Woori Pad: 9.7 inch Android tablet from Korea

Plenty of companies are hoping to take on the Apple iPad with Android tablets that have 7 or 10 inch displays. But for some reason very few have an Apple-like 9.7 inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Enter the Woori Pad, a Korean tablet with a 9.7 inch screen and a 1028 x 764 pixel screen resolution.

The tablet has a 1GHz processor and comes with 16GB to 32GB of storage space. Unlike the Apple iPad, it has a microSDHC card slot for expansion, a USB port, and what looks like a webcam on the back. The tablet runs Google Android 2.2.

The Woori Pad isn't exactly the most attractive Android tablet I've seen. But it's one of the only games in town if you're looking for something that doesn't have a widescreen display. Unfortunately I doubt we'll see this tablet sold outside of Korea anytime soon.

Sharp Galapagos tablets coming to America

Sharp recently introduces a line of 5 and 10 inch tablets in Japan. The Sharp Galapagos tablets are equipped with WiFi, 8GB of storage, and Google Android. What sets them apart from the crowd are their high resolution displays and Sharp's digital content stores thanks to partnerships Sharp has worked out with eBook and magazine publishers.

Now it looks like Sharp plans to sell the Galapagos tablets internationally, starting in the US. Eventually they'll be available in China, India, and other countries.

The 5.5 inch tablet has a 1024 x 600 pixel display while the 10.l8 inch model has a 1366 x 800 pixel screen. Most Android phones on the market today have 800 x 480 pixel or lower resolution screens, although we're starting to see Android tablets with higher resolution displays.

There's no word on the US pricing or launch details yet.

Dell set to update its Latitude netbook line with dual core options

You don't hear a lot about the Dell's Latitude line of netbooks, because these machines are aimed at education customers. But Dell has been cranking out minor updates to these little workhorses for the last few years, and Notebook Italia reports that Dell will launch a new mdoel called the Latitude 2120 at CES next week.

The update will bring support for an Intel Atom N550 dual core CPU option as well as an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator.

The rest of the specs appear to be unchanged, with 3 and 6 cell battery options, a 10.1 inch display (with an optional touchscreen), 1 to 2GB of RAM, and the usual smattering of USB, Ethernet, and VGA ports.

What sets the Dell Latitude 2120 apart from most netbooks on the market are the rubberized case and anti-microbial treatment which make the mini-laptop a decent choice for classroom settings.

No word on pricing or availability yet.

Gigabyte's Booktop netbook gets the dual core treatment

It looks like the Gigabyte Q2005 we spotted yesterday isn't the only member of Gigabyte's netbook family that's getting a dual core upgrade. The company has also added the Gigabyte M1005 to its netbook line, with a 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 dual core CPU.

The M1005 is similar to the company's earlier Booktop netbooks, which means it's designed to work with a docking station so that you can stick the computer sideways on your desk, plug in a monitor, keyboard, mouse and other peripherals, and use it as desktop computer — one which you can also grab and go for use around the house or on the road.

The computer has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of memory, a 250GB or 320GB hard drive, 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and audio jacks, and a memory card reader. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 1.3MP webcam. The Gigabyte M1005 has a 4 cell battery.

The docking station also has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, mic, headphone, and D-sub jacks.

Toshiba NB550D netbook to feature AMD Ontario chip?

I expect to see a fair number of laptops sporting shiny new AMD Fusion chips including the low-power Ontario and Zacate processors at CES next week. But someone at Toshiba Germany apparently didn't feel like waiting, and went ahead and published a product page for a new model called the Toshiba NB550D with a 1GHz dual core AMD C50 (Ontario) chip.

The 10 inch mini-laptop features AMD Radeon HD 6250M graphics, Harman Kardon speakers, a 6 cell battery which is reportedly good for up to 9.5 hours of run time, HDMI ouput, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and the netbook-standard 1GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive. The machine runs Windows 7 Home Premium and will be available in green, orange, or brown.

Intel SSD 310 Series now available for notebooks, tablets, and more

Intel has launched a new solid state disks that it says is 1/8th the size of the company's X25 SSDs while offering similar or better performance. The Intel SSD 310 is a small form factor solid state disk, It look s like a mini PCI Express cad, but actually uses a SATA (or rather, mSATA) interface.

The Intel SSD 310 supports read speeds up to 200 MB/s and write speeds up to 70 MB/s. It comes in 40GB and 80GB capacities, with the 80GB model offering those top speeds. The 40Gb model is a bit slower, but it's also cheaper at just $99. The 80GB model runs $179.

Intel is targeting computer makers looking to build dual disk notebooks, single-disk netbooks and tablets, or low power embedded systems.

The Intel SSD 310 measures 2″ x 1.2″ x 0.2″ and weighs about a third of an ounce — or about as much as two nickels. Intel says it offers up to 60 percent better responsiveness than a typical 5400RPM hard drive.

TENQ P07 Ubuntu tablet breaks cover

With Android tablets falling from the skies like so much 7 and 10 inch hail, it's nice to see a few models pop up running other OSes as well. Take the TENQ P07, which was spotted running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition.

The P07 sports a 10″ multitouch display, 1.6Ghz Atom CPU, 2GB memory, and a 32Gb SSD. That should make startup times lightning quick, as Canonical devoted plenty of effort to optimizing the new version's boot process for SSDs. Gizchina has a few additional images, but no further specs or pricing and availability information has appeared yet.

MSI Shows Off its New Wind U270 Netbook Running on AMD Platform

Well, who says that MSI is just going to give up on its Wind netbook product series? No way, as the company just presented its new MSI Wind U270 netbook. Take note people – it is a netbook not a tablet. What's good to know about this new Wind netbook is the unusual fact that it will be running on AMD platform. To be exact, it is the AMD 1.6GHz Zacate Processor.

Additionally, said MSI Wind netbook will also feature – an 11.6-inch screen display in glossy finish and 1366×768 resolution, 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD, VGA output, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 port, Kensington lock port, 4-in-1 card reader, and ethernet jack.

Unfortunately, MSI is not yet ready to disclose availability and pricing of this netbook. But the good news is – you can now feast your eyes on the video demo of the said netbook courtesy of netbooknews.

MSI introduces U270 laptop with AMD Zacate chipset

PC maker MSI helped to jump-start the netbook revolution in 2008 with some of the most exciting budget 10 inch notebooks available at the time. But the company has been pretty quiet for much of 2010, launching a few minor revisions of its netbook and laptop lineup. Things could get a bit more exciting again in 2011, now that MSI is preparing to launch an 11.6 inch laptop running AMD's new Zacate chipset.

The Zacate chip combines a low power CPU with high performance integrated graphics capable of handling HD video, 3D gaming, and other tasks that you would normally need a discrete graphics card to handle. The folks at Netbook News got a chance to check out the U270 at an event in Taipei, but the laptop will also make an appearance in Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show next week.

The MSI U270 has a 1366 x 768 pixel display, up to 500GB hard drive, and up to 4GB of RAM. The Zacate processor is a 1.6GHz chip which uses 18W of power or less. The laptop has 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI output, and an SD card reader.

Gigabyte unveils Q2005 netbook with Intel Atom N550 dual core CPU

Gigabyte recently updated its line of convertible tablet-style netbooks to include the Gigabyte T1005 10.1 inch netbook with a dual core Atom N550 processor. But if you're looking for something a bit cheaper, without the tablet functionality, it looks like Gigabyte has you covered. The company's new Q2005 netbook has the same Atom N550 chip as its cousin, but it lacks the touchscreen or swiveling display.

The Q2005 also lacks the high resolution display found on the T1005. This model has a standard 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screen. The rest of the specs are also pretty standard netbook fare, including 1GB of DDR3 memory (with support for up to 2GB), a 250GB hard drive (with support for up to 500GB), 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Optional Bluetooth 3.0, a 0.3MP camera, Ethernet and VGA ports, and a 3 or 6 cell battery.

The only thing that really sets this model apart from the crowd is an 8-in-1 flash card reader (most netbooks come with SD card readers, or maybe SD/MMC/MS readers).

There's no official word on pricing yet, but I'm guessing it's fair to the Q2005 will be cheaper than the tablet-style Gigabyte T1005, which runs about $579 and up.

Onkyo introduces 10 inch Android tablet

Japanese PC maker Onkyo recently launched a whole line of tablet computers running Windows 7. But that doesn't mean the company doesn't have its eye on the uber-trendy Android tablet space as well. PC Watch reports that Onkyo will also launch a 10 inch tablet with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Google Android 2.2 soon.

The tablet has a 10.1 inch. 1024 x 600 pixel capacitive multitouch display, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluooeth 2.1, a 1.3MP camera, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. It supports HDMI output with an optional dock accessory.

Like most Onkoy products, I'd be surprised if this tablet is widely distributed in the US, although there's always a chance that you might be able to pick one up from an importer like Dynamism or China Grabber.

Lenovo LePad tablet makes a Chinese appearance

Lenovo is expected to launch its upcoming LePad tablet first in China, and then possibly in other parts of the globe. But there's a chance that the company might at least show off the LePad at the CES trade show in Las Vegas next month… especially since the company appears to have at least one prototype floating around. According to Cloned in China, Lenovo has started an official microblog in China, which features a few of the first images of the upcoming tablet.

At first glance, the pictures appear to show a small notebook-style computer. But if you look more closely, you can see that the display is detachable, allowing you to use the computer in tablet mode.

In fact, the LePad in the pictures looks an awful lot like the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid that the company showed off nearly a year ago.

The original concept for the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid was a computer with two components. The keyboard area would have its own processor, hard drive, and other components, and when you docked the tablet, it would essentially function as a display for a Windows 7 system. When you removed the tablet portion, it would automatically switch to its built-in ARM-based processor and custom Linux operating system which Lenovo called Skylight. Lenovo has since decided to drop the Skylight platform and instead use Android — although it's not clear from these photos whether the tablet runs Android or not, since we only see it running Windows.

Update: Engadget has some more details and hands-on photos. It looks like Lenovo is keeping the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid alive, as well as offering the LePad slate as a standalone device.

The slate features a 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen display and currently runs Google Android 2.2. The LePad has a mini HDMI port and a mini USB port, and front and rear-facing cameras. Lenovo isn't talking about the processor yet, but Engadget reports it felt pretty snappy.

Engadget reports that the U1 Hybrid dock has also shrunk to match the 10.1 inch slate. Earlier versions of the U1 Hybrid were designed for an 11.6 inch tablet/screen. The docking station has an HDMI port, but again Lenovo isn't really talking about the processor or other specs yet.

These products are due out in China within the next month or two.

The Airis Slimpad Is Almost There, But Not Quite

Airis, a European electronics manufacturer, is about to come out with their Slimpad. It's pretty nice – but it has a few shortcomings. First of all, it packs a pretty dated CPU, an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6Ghz. It also has limited wireless only 802.11B/G. It also has €600 to 800 price tag – that's pretty steep.

There are a few things it did get right, though. It has a spacious 11.6″ 1366×768 pixel capacitive display, 32GB SSD, Mini HDMI out, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and runs on Windows 7. If all those are worth several hundred Euros for you, then consider this a good buy.

Another Tablet To Look Out For From INMEDIA

More companies are throwing their hats into the tablet ring. One of the latest offerings is  Windows 7 Tablet from In Media. Supposedly featuring a 1.66GHZ Intel Atom processor, it also boasts an HDMI interface, a forward-facing camera, an 11″ LCD screen, built-in eReader functionality and a 160GB hard drive.

It's supposed to roll out Q1 2011 and cost $399. Details are sketchy though – don't hold your breath that this will be a frontrunner in the tablet wars.

Another one for the tablet bandwagon. BenQ, the popular electronics manufacturer, is joining the overcrowded market with its own offering.  Called the R100, it will be a 10.1-inch device, with a 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen and running on Android. It will be packing an 833MHz ARM CPU. It also offer stylus support for handling both simplified and traditional Chinese handwriting.

Additional specs include 8GB of internal storage, an SD slot, mini-USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a mini-HDMI socket are also marked for inclusion. Connectivity options will be an 802.11b/g/n with Bluetooth. No prices or images yet, though – have to wait for the official launch for those.

What did you get?

Get any good presents this year (or buy anything good for yourself)? I received a few nice shirts and splurged on a 16GB micro SDHC card for my phone. Exciting, I know. If you can do better, sound off in the comments.

And don't forget, if you're replacing your old gadgets, you can make a few bucks and reduce landfill waste by selling them at eBay, Gazelle, or another service, or find a local electronics recycler. Many Best Buy stores accept gadgets, or you can find other places to recycle items you no longer need by entering your zipcode at mygreenelectronics.org.

Archos 70 and 101 Android tablets reviewed

The Archos 70 and Archos 101 may not be the cheapest 7 and 10 inch Android tablets on the market — you can find a number of less expensive models from China, including the WiiPad Slim Plus which I'm giving away. But good luck finding another sub-$300 tablet from a Western company with a 1GHz processor, capacitive touchscreen display, superb codec support, and an ultrathin case.

Engadget's Joanna Stern has posted a detailed review covering both the Archos 70 and 101, and she seems to be pretty impressed (if not necessarily blown away by) the performance for each device. But she was underwhelmed by the cheap plastic case design and the display's poor viewing angles.

Both tablets should be available for purchase in the US soon. Right now you can pick up an Archos 70 with a 250GB hard drive for $349, but a cheaper model with an 8GB SSD should be available soon, as well as the Archos 101 10 inch model.

You can find more details in Engadget's review, or check out my hands-on impressions with the Archos 70 and Archos 101 from earlier this year.

Refurb 11.6 inch MacBook Air now selling for $849

Apple still has no plans to offer a netbook, if you define a netbook as a low cost ultraportable computer. But Apple recently released an 11.6 inch version of the MacBook Air, which at $999 and up is relatively cheap for an Apple laptop. And now the company is offering refurbished models for $849, making the company's smallest and lightest laptop even more affordable.

Sure, you can buy two or three 10 inch netbooks running Windows for the same price, but good luck finding another computer with a Core 2 Duo processor, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 64GB SSD, ridiculously thin case, and NVIDIA graphics for that price. Oh yeah, it also runs OS X out of the box, no hackintoshing required.

Well, here's something from Acer – right on Christmas eve. The Aspire One 522 uses the same shell as the Aspire One D255, but its insides are definitely not the same. The 522 will be using AMD's Fusion platform with the company's C-50 APU with dual 1GHz cores. These are very good power-saving chips and will extend battery life by a lot. Another feature will be the use of integrated Radeon 6250 graphics with full DX11 support with UVD3 for better hardware-accelerated video. The screen will be 10.1 inches. Additional specs include HDMI and VGA out, three USB ports, webcam, and a multi-format card reader.

BenQ set to launch an Android tablet

BenQ is the latest PC maker to throw its hat in the Android tablet ring. While the company's computers don't often make it to the US, you can pick them up in Taiwan, China, and sometimes other locales. According to PC World, BenQ will launch an Android tablet in China and Taiwan in early 2011.

Dell Streak 7 inch Android tablet coming soon

Dell hasn't exactly been shy about letting us know that the company is working on 7 and 10 inch Android tablets to flesh out the line started by the Dell Streak 5 inch tablet (or oversized smartphone, if you will). But Dell has been a bit tight lipped on the launch dates for these new products. Now it looks like the Dell Streak 7 is probably close to launch, if a few bits of leaked data are anything to go by.

Earlier this week, the Dell Streak 7 name showed up on the web site for Vaja, a company that makes cases for tablets and other electronic devices. Then the tablet earned its WiFi certification. Now Engadget has received the treatment for an upcoming commercial starring the Dell Streak 7.

Like most ads, this one is light on actual specs, so we don't learn anything about the screen resolution or CPU, but Dell does say the Streak 7 will have a sturdy Gorilla Glass screen, the Dell Stage user interface, and the Blio eBook app.

You can find the complete ad treatment at Engadget.

Asus to Launch a 7-, 12- and 10-inch Tablets During CES 2011

It looks like CES 2011 is the event to watch out for next year. With several major industry players planning on unveiling their respective tablet devices, pads, netvertibles and slates, CES 2011 will definitely be an exciting tech gig. One of these manufacturers who are planning to parade their latest tablets happens to be ASUS.

According to Digitimes, Asus is set to announce threee major product lines during CES 2011 – the Eee Reader, Eee Note and Eee Pad. The Eee Pad is a 12-inch Windows 7-based device targeted for the enterprise market. Another two 10-inch Eee Pads will also be launched this time around geared for the consumer market. One of these Eee Pads will sport Windows 7 and Intel's Oak Trail platform while the other will be packed with Nvidia Tegra 2 and Google Android. Tentative price range for this Eee Pads will be $499-$599. Obviously Asus is gearing up this tablet to go up against the iPad.

Unfortunately, images or photos of these tablet devices are still not available. I guess perhaps the demo video of the Eee Pad will suffice for now?

Notion Ink Adam tablet unboxed

Notion Ink isn't expected to begin delivering Adam tablets to customers until next month at the earliest. But a Dutch developer received an early unit to help him work on apps for the platform, and he's posted the first real-world unboxing photos to hit the web.

The Adam tablet features a 10 inch display, NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, and Google Android 2 processor. Some models will be available with a low power transflective Pixel Qi display which is viewable both in direct sunlight and indoors. There's also a 3G option. All told, the Adam tablet has some of the best specs of any Android tablet around, which has led to quite a bit of pre-launch buzz, although the company also had a bit of turbulence with its pre-launch event, with some folks even wondering if the whole thing was a scam.

While a few unboxing shots might not put everyone's suspicions to rest, it's nice to see something aside from the videos put together by the Notion Ink team to confirm that the Adam tablet may be real and ready to ship soon.

Airis Slimpad is an 11″ Windows 7 tablet under two pounds

The Airis Slimpad is almost a very interesting tablet, but it falls short in a couple areas. Still, there's plenty to like about the device. It's got a spacious 11.6″ 1366×768 pixel capacitive display, 32GB SSD, Mini HDMI out, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and Windows 7. Now for the shortfalls. For a CPU, the Slimpad packs an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6Ghz — not the freshest horse in the stables by any means. It's got wireless, though only 802.11B/G, and N support would definitely make it a more compelling device.

Airis lists the street price of the Slimpad at €600 to 800 — or roughly $800 to 1050 U.S. That seems a little on the steep side, so you may want to wait for the upcoming flood of new tablets to emerge before opening your wallet for this one. Oh yeah… It also bears a very striking resemblance to the Pegatron Masterpad tablet we saw back in August…

But the computer comes with 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and most importantly, the Indamixx software suite which comes with dozens of applications and digital effects for creating, editing, and playing music on the go.

The Indamixx2 tablet is available with Windows 7 for $779, or for $699 with MeeGo Linux. While you could certainly find a cheaper tablet, what you're paying for in this case is the Indamixx software suite which combines open source and proprietary apps for music creation. The company has been selling netbooks, notebooks, and other devices with its custom blend of music software for a few years. The hardware is often off-the-shelf, but it's the music production software which makes these products stand out.

It's worth noting that the company is describing its latest tablets as "beta" products, so don't be surprised if there are still a few kinks to work out.

More tablets coming at CES

It's definitely starting to look like tablets are going to be the hot item of CES 2011. That doesn't necessarily mean that tablets will be everywhere you look in the coming year. After all, one of the hottest items at CES 2010 was the 3D HDTV. I can't count how many of them I saw on display, but when's the last time you walked into your buddy's house and saw his new 60 inch 3D TV? That said, tablets are off to a pretty good start in 2010, with a few blockbuster success stories such as the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab, so it's going to be hard to keep every computer maker in the world from attempting to bring a tablet to market. It's like 2008 and netbooks all over again.

DigiTimes is reporting that we can expect a number of machines from several major Taiwanese computer makers. We're already aware of plans from Asus and MSI, but DigiTImes says ECS also plans to introduce a line of 6, 8, and 9.7 inch eBook readers with capacitive touchscreen displays, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, and support for Linux and Google Android. While they may be positioned as eBook readers, the Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor has already shown that the line separating an eReader from a tablet is pretty thin.

ECS is also reportedly working on a few Android and Windows 7 tablets with Intel and ARM-based chips. These will likely range in size from 7 to 10 inches.

MSI will show off Android and Windows tablets, while Asus is expected to introduce 3 tablets: The 12 inch Eee Pad EP121 as well as two 10 inch machines, one running Windows with an Intel Oak Trail chip, and the other running Android with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip.

DigiTimes also says Asus will also have several 7 inch models with ARM-based chips, one of which may include phone capabilities and mobile broadband access.

Asus to showcase 12 inch EP121 Windows tablet at CES

We've known that Asus is working on a Windows 7 tablet for a while, but now the company has put out a teaser video showing some of the tablet's features. The company will debut the Eee Pad EP121 during the week of CES in January.

Here's what we know about the EP121 so far: It will have a 12 inch display, multitouch input, an Intel Core i5 processor, and Windows 7 operating system. I'm starting to get the feeling that this tablet isn't going to come cheap, but I'm holding out a bit of hope for a sub $700 price tag, because Asus is slapping the Eee brand name on it, which is usually reserved for the company's more affordable products. Of course, it's also possible the Eee Pad moniker is just an attempt to capitalize on the success of the Eee PC netbook brand and get people to pay attention to this tablet. I'd say mission accomplished.

A few early prototypes have popped up in the past, sporting 1366 x 768 pixel displays and detachable keyboards. In fact, it was way back in May that Asus first introduced the Eee PC 121 concept. At the time, Asus was talking about a price of $500 or less, but looking at the specs (and at other Windows tablets on the market), I'd be surprised if the company sticks to that.

Tablet computers with Intel chips and Windows operating systems have been around for about a decade, but while they've been popular with some business users and a small niche of consumers, they've never captured the public's attention the way the Apple iPad has, whether due to their bulky form factor or high price tags or some other intangible aspect. Over the past year we've seen a few budget Windows tablets hit the market, but they've tended to have lousy battery life and mediocre performance. It should be interesting to see whether Asus has any original ideas that will make a Windows 7 tablet appealing to the masses.

You can check out the demo video after the break, where you can also hear Asus try out the latest pronunciation of its brand name.

Acer Aspire One 522 features AMD Ontario C-50, Radeon 6250 graphics

It's steady as she goes for Acer, with the Aspire One 522 stepping out from the shadows in the shell they first introduced with the AOD255. The 522 will run AMD's Fusion platform, featuring the company's C-50 APU with dual 1GHz cores (which sip a scant 9W total) and integrated Radeon 6250 graphics with full DX11 support and UVD3 for better hardware-accelerated video. The unit's battery is listed as providing an estimated 6 hours of runtime.

The 522 also features a 10.1″ 1280×720 pixel display, HDMI and VGA out, three USB ports, webcam, and a multi-format card reader. According to one source, the rest of the 522′s hardware will mirror that of the 255. Take the jump to get a look at the Aspire One 522 from additional angles!

NEC confirms CES launch for dual screen tablet, Android app store

NEC has confirmed plans to launch a dual screen Android tablet at CES in January. As expected, the machine will be part of the company's Cloud Communicator tablet line, and will feature two 7 inch touchscreen displays, WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G capabilities, and a stylus for input (I haven't seen any information on whether the displays will feature resistive or capacitive touch technology).

Probably the coolest feature is the ability to run different apps simultaneously on each LCD display. That's something NEC says is an industry first, although it's not that different from the new Eden interface Notion Ink is showing off for its Adam tablet. While the Notion Ink tablet has just a single screen, it features panels letting you view three different apps side by side on the same screen.

NEC will also be showing off its single screen Cloud Communicator which launched in Japan last month. The company is also introducing its new "andronavi" store for Android apps and media including content tailored for a Japanese market including Manga.

An NEC rep tells me that the company does plan to offer the dual screen tablet in the US at some point, but the release date hasn't been set yet. We might know more once CES begins.

WiiPad Slim Plus 7 inch Android tablet giveaway

The WiiPad Slim Plus is a 7 inch Android tablet with an ARM11-based processor and Google Android 2.1 operating system. It's hardly a state of the art machine, but it comes with the Android Market preloaded and can run many (but not all) modern third party Android apps.

It gets pretty lousy battery life, has  resistive touchscreen display, and a pretty lousy button layout. But as I stated in my recent review, it's actually a much better device than most of the 7 inch tablets available in its $150 price range.

But if that still seems like a lot of money to spend on an imperfect product, I've got a deal for you: I'm giving away the demo unit WiiPad sent me to review.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below. This contest will run through 12:01AM on Wednesday, December 29th.

Because I'm footing the bill for shipping, this contest is limited to US residents. If you live in another country and are willing to cover the costs of shipping, feel free to enter anyway, but I'll only cover domestic shipping. If you're selected as winner, I'll contact you via email, Twitter, or Facebook, so make sure to use valid credentials when you login to leave a comment. If I don't hear from you within 24 hours I may choose another winner.

Dell drops unlocked Streak to $399, won't ship until January

Good things come to those who wait, and in this particular case the good thing is a much cheaper Dell Streak. The company has knocked a whopping $180 off the sticker price for the unlocked Android tablet — so it'll now set you back just $399.99 if you decide to pull the trigger.

While the Streak still ships with Android 1.6, there's a fresh update to 2.2 waiting for you which will be delivered OTA when you first fire it up. The other downside is that you'll have to wait until mid-January for your device to ship. Streaks on contract ship right away, and they start at $199.99. You also can't get the special price on any color other than black, but you can always perform a little DIY magic to spruce it up.

Head on over to Dell to check out the full details.
