So you thought the iPhone 4 managed to pack a lot of pixels onto its 3.5 inch, 960 x 640 pixel display? Try this on for size: Hitachi is bringing a new 4.5 inch IPS display to market which has a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution.
The pixel density is actually similar to what you'd get from the iPhone 4 or the latest iPod touch. But because the screen is about an inch larger, there's room for a whole lot of extra pixels. If you think about it, most netbooks have 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screens. That means you can display a heck of a lot more information on this screen which is less than half the size.
Of course, a 4.5 inch display isn't designed for netbooks. It will likely be used for smartphones or small tablets. Rather than showing more pictures, text, or other graphic elements on the screen, the display will most likely be used to show sharper text, images, and other graphics. Apple introduced the concept of screen so sharp that you can't make out individual pixels with the iPhone 4, and it's good to see other companies picking up the torch and carrying it even further.
Hitachi expects to begin mass producing the new display in October.
