Broadcom is the latest company to introduce a dual core chip for smartphons and other mobile devices. The company's new BCM28150 chip features two 1.1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processors and support for 1080p HD video playback and recording.
The 40nm chip can also handle HSPA+ , EDGE and WCDMA mobile broadband, OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0 graphics, and supports cameras with up to 20MP sensors.
Broadcom will be showing off the new chip at Mobile World Congress next week. On paper it looks like it could be competitive with dual core ARM-based chips from NVIDIA, Freescale, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments. But until device makers start to put the BCM28150 in smartphones, tablets, or other devices, it will be tough to see how it really stacks up in real world situations.
