The Atom line processor's are not known for being speedy. They are meant to be the chips that run low-cost netbooks. Netbooks are meant to be used in basic computing. These Atom chips are all about stability and battery life rather than raw power. However, the insistence of battery life in Atom's performance hindered the progress of this netbook chips in terms of power in the course of 3 years. The improvements in speed from Intel N270 to N455 are negligible.
When Intel released the Intel Atom N550 and N570 last year, things got interesting. The dual-core Atom line ups its performance in computing tasks because of its multi-core processors. Still, the HD / 3D capabilities is the same, even until now.
VR-Zone published one of the first few benchmarks for the upcoming Cedar Trail. This next-gen Atom chips will power up netbooks as they score up to 3 time higher on the 3DMark06 benchmark than the current line of Atom processors. However, the AMD E350 blows the Cedar Trail out of the water.
The new line of Atom processors include the Intel Atom N2600 (1.66 GHz) and the Inel N2800 (1.86 GHz) with both being dual cores. The N2800 may look like the strongest Atom incarnation today, the benchmark says otherwise. The Atom N570 bests the N2600 in benchmarks on a non-graphics extensive situation.
AMD is still the winner here with its Zacate line as it offers low power consumption, decent performance and a far better graphics and CPU solutions. The AMD line has reasonable battery life too.
Intel's chips run in lower power and, of course, Intel has very strong connections with laptop makers. Intel will still continue to dominate the netbooks in the future because of this.
