Here we got some interesting notes from DisplaySearch as published by Digitimes. According to the DisplaySearch Quarterly Advanced Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report, shipments of netbooks and tablet PCs plummet by as much as 4% during 2Q 2010 as compared to the same quarter last year. However, in terms of year-to-year shipment, the data shows a 29% increase overall.
Now here's the more interesting part. According to the report, the iPad's shipment of around 3.3 million units the decrease in the overall netbook/tablet PC shipment would have been down by 14% on quarter and 13% on year. This only goes to show that whether we like it or not, the iPad really has an effect in the portable PC market.
According to the report:
Overall, the portable PC market posted strong on-year unit growth in the second quarter, surging 32% to 50.4 million units. However, not all market segments were equal, and it is apparent that the combination of iPads and falling ASPs took share from other parts of the mini-note/tablet PCs segment and from the ultra-portable segments of the market. Buyers chose iPad as a thin, lightweight device but buyers seeking more functionality chose larger notebooks, with only slightly higher ASPs. The price gap between the average 11.6-inch ultra-portable (ultra-thin) notebook and the average 15.6-inch portable notebook fell to less than US$60 in the second quarter.
John Jacobs, director of Notebook Market Research has this to say about the effect of the iPad to the netbook/tablet PC market.
"The end of 2007 witnessed the launch of mini-notes. The first quarter of 2010 signaled the birth of the tablet PC, and possibly by extension, the beginning of the end of the mini-note market, especially in developed regions."
So what do you think guys? Are we seeing the death of the netbook?
