Hitachi is showing off several different display technologies at the CEATEC trade show in Japan this week. One is a super-high resolution IPS display that comes close to Apple's iPhone 4 display in terms of pixel density. The other is a low power display technology that looks E Ink when you cut off the backlight.
The high resolution screen on display at CEATEC is a 6.6 inch screen with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. It features In Plane Switching technology which makes the screen easy to see from a variety of viewing angles. And it has a ppi (pixels per inch" density of 302, which isn't that far from the 326 ppi on Apple's new iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch. It sounds like a nice fit for upcoming high resolution tablets.
Hitachi is also showing off a 2.5 inch, 320 x 240 pixel display using MEMS and TFT technology. It's just a prototype at this point, but the screen reportedly uses less power than a typical LCD display, and can handle more colors. What's even more interesting is that like screens from Pixel Qi and Qualcomm, this display features a reflective mode which lets you turn off the backlight and read using ambient light or even direct sunlight.
TechOn has some images of the MEMS screens, which look pretty promising.
Hitachi is working with Pixtronix on the MEMS technology and the companies hope to produce 10 inch and smaller displays in early 2012 for tablets and smartphones.
