Taiwanese DMP Introduces $100 Edubook Netbook

The $100 netbook has been a long-standing goal for manufacturers, as it was the initial goal sought by the OLPC movement that led to the netbook craze. A few manufacturers have gotten close, though their products have been vastly unsatisfactory.

Now a new challenger has appeared – computer maker DMP of Taiwan with the all-new Edubook netbook.

The Edubook has an 8.9-inch screen and low-powered CPU developed by DMP. It can run Windows XP, though an OS is optional, and it's powered by eight AA batteries for a four-hour runtime.

AA power might seem like quite a stretch for developed nations, but in countries where the power grid is incomplete the AA option might be the best available. Latin American countries have already received shipments of the Edubook netbook, and Eastern European and African governments have expressed interest as well.

The netbook is shipped in component form and is assembled on-site in a thirty-step, ten-minute process in order to avoid customs duties and meet import requirements.
