System76 Galago UltraPro packs a Haswell chip and Ubuntu into a .75-inch thick chassis

Linux boutique System76 pulled the wraps off several new laptops yesterday, including the Galago UltraPro. It's a sleek new notebook that runs an Intel Core i7 Haswell chip — which means it should offer plenty of power and exceptional battery life. According to System76, the Galago UltraPro is also the first laptop under one inch thick to ship with Intel's Iris Pro graphics.

What else is packed into the Galago UltraPro's three-quarter-inch frame? It can be configured with up to 16B of RAM, both mSATA and SATA SSD (and/or SATA HDD), 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a 53 watt-hour battery. As for ports, the UltraPro offers HDMI and Display Port outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, and three USB 3.0 ports. There's also an SD card reader and a 1MP webcam. The base configuration weighs just a touch under three pounds.

With 4GB of memory and a 500GB SATA hard drive, the Galago UltraPro starts at $995. System76 is now taking pre-orders and the laptop will begin shipping next month.

In the past, a laptop like this would have been viewed as a productivity machine. Linux wasn't exactly blessed with an abundance of top-notch gaming titles and Intel graphics have never been all that impressive. Now, however, things are different. Linux users can install Steam and download a swath of popular first-tier games like Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3 — and Haswell's integrated graphics offer substantially better performance.
