Sony is expanding its line of slider-style Windows 8 tablets. Last year the company introduced the Sony Vaio Duo 11, a tablet with a slide-out keyboard that lets you use the machine like a laptop.
Now, as expected, Sony is following up with a 13 inch model called the Sony Vaio Duo 13.
The Sony Vaio Duo 13 has a carbon fiber case, and weighs 2.93 pounds, making it pretty light for a laptop (although a bit hefty for a tablet). At 0.77 inches, it's also thin by notebook standards, but chunky compared to most tablets.
That's probably why Sony is marketing the computer as an ultrabook rather than a tablet.
The full QWERTY keyboard and tiny touchpad help justify that position, since you really can use the Duo 13 as a notebook — as long as you don't mind being unable to adjust the position of the screen on your notebook. Basically you can use the Sony Vaio Duo 13 in two positions: with the screen open, or closed. While open, you can't tilt the screen forward or back.
Since the new tablet has a smaller bezel around the display than the 11.6 inch model, the Vaio Duo 13 is almost the same size and weight as its "smaller" sibling.
The computer has a 1920 x 1080 pixel touchscreen display and support for a digital pen, an Intel Haswell processor (with support for anything up to a Core i7 chip). It'll ship with 4GB of RAM, a 128GB solid state disk, and features 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS.
Sony's new slider has a starting price of $1399. It's expected to go on sale June 9th, and will be available in black and white colors.
