If you've had your eye on a shiny new ultrabook but found yourself put off the by the high prices... well these new thin and light laptops aren't exactly going to be netbook-cheap anytime soon. But there are a few good deals making the rounds today. Amazon is offering a $100 gift card when you buy selected ultrabooks from Acer,...
Convertible tablet-style netbooks aren't exactly new, but I came across an unusual model form Chinese company Acamar today. There are two things that set the Acamar Transformer apart from other convertibles. For one thing, it has an 8.9 inch display. For another, it has an unusual design which allows you tilt back the screen before closing the lid in order...
The Asus Eee PC 1025C is anetbook with an Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail processor, a 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 6 cell battery, 320GB hard drive and 1GB of memory. It went on sale in the US recently for about $300. At the time we noted that Asus says the RAM is fixed to the motherboard...
Over the last few years Intel Atom chips have shown up in dozens of netbooks, a handful of tablets, and a few prototype smartphones. But Intel doesn't just reserve the Atom name for low power computing devices. There are also Intel chips designed for televisions, set-top-boxes, and similar devices. In 2009 Intel released the Atom CE4100, a 45nm, 1.2 GHz...
Apple is expected to have slimmer bezels for the smaller version of the iPad. This device, called the iPad Mini for the time being, will likely have a display size of 7.85 inches. This is slightly larger than the present offerings in 7-inch tablets available today, which could be one selling point for this device.
The second Cedar Trail netbook from Asus is now available for purchase in the US. On paper the new Eee PC 1025C looks a lot like the Eee PC X101CH I reviewed recently. But for a few extra dollars you get a few bonus features. Amazon is selling the Eee PC 1025C for $299.99. Like the Eee PC X101CH, the...
Windows 8 Consumer Preview runs reasonably well on netbooks as well as other notebook or desktop computers. But clearly the new Metro-style user interface was designed to be touched. So when the folks at Kupa offered to send me a Kupa X11 tablet loaded with the latest pre-release version of Windows 8, I jumped at the chance. The X11 normally...
The Asus Eee PC X101CH is probably one of the best new netbooks you can buy for $270 thanks to a Cedar Trail processor, fanless design, decent build quality and instant-on software. But the netbook has a few drawbacks for power users. For instance, it's nearly impossible to upgrade the RAM. The Intel Atom N2600 processor used in the Eee...
Nokia may be best known for making mobile phones. But a few years ago the company dipped its toes in the mobile PC market with the introduction of the Booklet 3G netbook. That didn't last long, but it looks like Nokia may take another crack at Windows by introducing a Windows 8 tablet later this year. DigiTimes reports that Nokia...
The Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet ships with a custom version of Google Android designed to let you download books, periodicals, and apps from the B&N Store. But hackers have been installing other versions of Android for months, allowing you to install Google's digital content store and tweak everything from the tablet's home screen to the on-screen keyboard. We've seen...
The Asus Eee PC X101CH is a netbook with a 10 inch display, a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N2600 dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. With a starting price of about $270, it's on of the cheapest mini-laptops available today, but it's also one of the first models to feature an Intel Cedar Trail processor....
While it's nice to imagine what Windows 8 would look like on a tablet like the HP TouchPad, the truth is that you probably won't be able to install Microsoft's upcoming operating system on any existing tablets with ARM-based processors. Microsoft has no plans to sell an installable version of Windows on ARM directly to consumers. Instead, if you want...
