MeeGo Linux was formed earlier this year by the merger of the Moblin and Maemo projects. While Maemo was designed to run on smartphones and tablets with ARM-based processors, Moblin was backed by Intel as a custom Linux distribution for netbooks with Intel Atom processors. MeeGo has expanded the horizons of both projects, with MeeGo variations designed for netbooks, tablets, in-car entertainment systems and smartphones… and now it looks like Intel isn't the only major chip-maker backing the project.
AMD has announced that it will support the project, providing "engineering expertise."
The MeeGo Linux project is now managed by the Linux Foundation, and AMD is already a partner with the foundation, so the move isn't really that big a step.
AMD has also started focusing on low power chips for netbooks, tablets, and other mobile computers recently, so it makes sense that the company would support the development of the new operating system designed to run on those devices. But it's still interesting to see AMD announce its support for a project that was largely started by rival chip-maker Intel.
