The Archos GamePad is a 7 inch Android tablet with a touchscreen display and video game controllers built into the side of the tablet. As the name (and design) suggest, the tablet is designed to play games, and it features function buttons similar to those you'd find on an Xbox or PlayStation controller.
Archos hasn't announced US pricing for the tablet yet, but it's expected to launch in Europe this month for under $200. This week the Archos GamePad showed up at the FCC website, suggesting that a US launch could be imminent as well.
The tablet features a 1.5 GHz Rockchip RK3066 dual core processor with ARM Mali 400 graphics. It has a 1024 x 600 pixel capacitice multitouch display and runs Google Android 4.0.
The Archos GamePad also comes with the Google Play Store pre-loaded, which means you'll be able to download thousands of free and paid games from Google's store.
Of course, most of those games were designed for phones and tablets with touchscreens, so the gaming buttons on the side of the tablet may not be all that useful. But some games let are designed to work with gamepads.
And then there are emulators. Developers have created emulators for classic game consoles including the Nintendo Entertainment System, GameBoy Advance, PlayStation, and Nintendo 64, just to name a few.
The Archos GamePad could be an excellent device for playing games designed for those platforms.
Charbax from ARMdevices got a chance to check out the GamePad recently and he's shared a few videos showing general gameplay as well as an N64 emulator.
