Sneak peek at Kubuntu 9.10 netbook edition – Video

kubuntu 9.10 netbook remix

Ubuntu 9.10 is due out in October, and the developers behind the popular Linux distribution are working to make sure the OS runs as well smoothly as possible on netbooks. I already mentioned that there's a refined Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface. But if you prefer the KDE-based Kubuntu over the GNOME-based Ubuntu (and if you don't know what that means, then you can probably skip over the rest of this article and maybe just check out the pretty slick looking video after the break), you'll be happy to know that Kubuntu 9.10 will also be available in a netbook edition.

Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 is based on KDE 4.3 RC, but it's been tweaked to play nicely with small screens. The developers are still working on additional features for netbooks, but for now you can get all the eye candy and new features that come with Kubuntu, along with adjusted fonts and desktop settings to help everything fit nicely on a 1024 x 600 pixel or lower resolution display.

While earlier versions of KDE had a Windows-like interface withe a pretty standard start menu and taskbar/panel approach, KDE 4.x has a widget-based interface that lets you easily customize your desktop and panel with widgets that let you interact with your computer, desktop, and web apps. Kubuntu 9.10 also replaces the Konqueror web browser with Arora, a new light weight browser based on Webkit.

You can check out a video of Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3 Netbook Edition running in a virtual machine after the break.
