The Sugar OS, the operating system commonly found on machines from the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project, is now available as a free download to try out for anyone who may be interested, but may not need or want to get the OLPC XO laptop.
The "Sugar on a Stick", as it is called, is up to version 2.0 and can be downloaded as a binary image from the Sugar Labs wiki page. Version 2.0, also known as Blueberry (the previous version was called Strawberry), is based on Fedora 12 and includes full optimisation for USB flash thumb drives.
Software bundled with the Sugar On A Stick includes Open Office 4 Kids, a streamlined version of OpenOffice.org, improved wireless networking support and updated version of the various software packages that were found in the previous releases.
Installation will require a 1GB USB stick, the 589MB image and the Fedora LiveUSB Creator software. So if you ever wanted to try out the Sugar OS without needing to get the XO laptop, here is your chance. Should work well on your Eee PC too.
