So much for affordable ultrabooks: Asus says prices could top $1000

Asus UX21Ultraportable laptops are nothing new. The Toshiba Libretto, for instance, packed a full PC into a tiny case with a 6.1 inch display way back in 1996. but up until recently if you wanted an ultraportable notebook you had to pay an ultra-expensive price. Miniaturization doesn't come cheap. Netbooks changed that, driving down the cost of highly portable laptop computers...

Acer Aspire One Happy 2 review

Tablet computers have risen to take away the spotlight from netbooks in the eyes of most consumers nowadays. However, there are still a lot of things that netbooks can do that tablets simply can't. Consider the Acer Aspire One Happy 2. It offers half a terabyte of local storage while weighing little more than a kilogram and comes in a shocking pink color, to boot. It's kind of like a 10-inch tablet with a built-in keyboard and trackpad. In fact, that's what all netbooks are like. So what makes this one stand out from all the others? Read the rest of this Acer Aspire One Happy 2 review to find out.

Deals of the Day (7-28-11)

Acer Aspire One AOD257Newegg has an excellent deal on a fairly recent Acer netbook model today... and for some reason the company is throwing in a free DVD burner/Blu-ray drive for good measure. I'm pretty sure the netbook doesn't have the processing power to decode Blu-ray videos, but I suppose the DVD burner could come in handy. Anyway, here's a roundup of today's...

Sony Vaio Y Series (AMD E350) Revealed

Sony Vaio Y AMD E350

Following Apple's release of an 11inch edition of the MacBook Air, Sony has slightly gone higher with its 11.6inch edition Vaio Y series. Powered by an innovative AMD E350 Fusion dual core processor, the Vaio Y appears very snappy and for multitasking environment, this is a great bet. And where the E350 processor is advanced compared to an Atom is graphics performance. In fact, its on-board graphics chip that shares system memory is way quicker at providing 3D graphics, managing nearly 12fps in a 3D game.

Even though the Vaio Y bears 4GB of RAM, it only accompanies a 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, thus limiting the offered space to merely 3.5GB of RAM. Of course this should be seen as a disadvantage, since the OS can't be exchanged out for a 64-bit edition or Windows 7 Professional in that regard, when ordering. Not really recommended for strenuous work in a GPGPU-geared program, but it's also competent enough to playing 720p high definition video – so you can't just disregard it yet.

Earlier AMD laptop and netbook versions have been power greedy, resulting in reduced battery life, and produced a lot of excess heat – which leads to laptops with noisy cooling fans unproductively attempting to trim down lap-scorching temperatures. Appreciatively, the base of the Vaio Y is never clumsily warm. Its fun is a bit audible though, but at manageable levels.

First Glimpse At Lenovo's Other Tablet

Lenovo has been planning to release two Android tablets this year: the already-known IdeaPad K1 aimed at mass consumption and a more business-oriented tablet aimed at small to medium enterprises. We've seen quite a bit of the first one, but we haven't had any luck about the second. Well, that is until now.

A recent event in Brazil has resulted in our first glimpse of Lenovo's mystery product. The big thing about it is that it will have a case that allows a keyboard and an optical TrakPoint sensor to work with the tablet – enabling easy navigation. Additional specs include Android 3.x, a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU and a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display.

Full news about the tablet should be available in a month.

Sharp's 7-Inch Galapagos Tablet At FCC

Here's a bit of news for small device lovers.

Sharp has just filed with the FCC about their new Galapagos tablet. Boasting a 7-inch display, it will also be packing Android 2.4. This is special because it's the first version of Android tailored specifically for Android tablets with 7-inch screens. No more fixing those resolutions for a perfect fit. Other than that, details are a bit sketchy. It has been confirmed that that it will be using 802.11b/g/n WiFi networking, though.

Don't hold your breath waiting for it though – it's still at the FCC and it may take some time before it hits store shelves.
