Lilbits (5-31-2013): White Nexus 4, Cheap Ivy Bridge PCs

Google's flagship smartphone features a 4.7 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display, Gorilla Glass on both the front and the back, and a speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

The Nexus 4 may not be quite as fast or have quite the same screen resolution as the latest handsets from Samsung, Sony, LG, or HTC. But it's still an awful lot of phone for $299 and up.

So far it's only been available in one color: black. Now it's available in two. And for a limited time Google is also throwing in a free bumper case when you order.

  • Ever wish your Nexus 4 had a serial port? There's a hack for that

  • Gigabyte releases a free Start Menu replacement for Windows 8
Microsoft may be bringing back the Start Button with Windows 8.1 later this year, but the Start Menu is still a goner. Fortunately there are plenty of third party apps which bring back some of the classic start menu functionality. Now Gigabyte's offering one called Smart Switch for free. [Gigabyte]
  • Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u just went through the FCC (again)
Lenovo's ThinkPad Twist convertible tablet has been available since last fall, so what's it doing at the FCC website this week? Does it mean a Haswell update is in the works? I dunno, but that seems like as good a bet as any. [FCC]
  • Hisense Sero 7 Pro $149 tablet unboxed, reviewed
Hisense and Walmart are offering one of the best tablets you can find for $149. It's basically a Nexus 7 with a microSD card slot, a little less storage, a rear camera, and a lower price tag. Maybe the next-gen Nexus 7 will make the Sero 7 Pro look silly, but right now it looks pretty good. [reverendkjr @ YouTube]
  • Gumstix introduces customizable Alto35 $89 expansion board with a 3.5 inch touchscreen
Gumstix has introduced a tiny device that you can customize using the online Gepetto custom design platform. It's not exactly a consumer-oriented device, but if you have dreams of building your own hardware, it's an interesting little platform. [PR Newswire]
  • With Haswell around the corner, Ivy Bridge computers are about to get really cheap
Intel's upcoming Haswell processors will use less power and offer better performance than today's Ivy Bridge chips. But if you haven't bought a new PC in a few years, upgrading to Ivy Bridge will be almost as good as waiting for Haswell — and PC makers are probably going to mark down prices on Ivy Bridge systems pretty soon.
