The upcoming GamePop video game console is a small box designed to let users play Android video games on a TV. But unlike similar devices from GameStick and Ouya, the Gamepop uses a subscription model.
Instead of paying for individual games, customers will be able to pay $6.99 per month to access a catalog of 500 or so games at a time. If you pre-order one by June 30th, GamePop maker Bluestacks will send you a box for free.
But if you wait until June or later, the box will cost you $129.
That makes the GamePop more expensive than many other devices of its type — although if you normally spend more than $7 each month on games, it could end up saving you money in the long run.
Ouya sells its game console for $99, while the GameStick costs $79.
BlueStacks also has a system that will let gamers use Android phones or tablets as gamepads/controllers for the GamePop device.
The company still hasn't actually said what kind of hardware the GamePop system will have, so it's tough to say how it will compare to other Android gaming devices. But the subscription -based service should be enough to set it apart.
I'd still be wary of pre-ordering a device without knowing more about it. While GamePop will send you a unit for free if you pre-order in time, if you cancel the subscription service within the first 12 months you'll be required to send the box back and pay a $25 restocking fee or pay a $100 early termination fee.
