Sony Fit laptops leave 1366 x 768 pixel screens in the rear view mirror

Sony has introduced a new line of mid-range laptops with some features that used to be reserved for premium models. The new Sony Fit and Sony Fit E notebooks are due out in mid-May, and each model will feature a backlit keyboard, a touchscreen and a 1600 x 900 pixel or 1920 x 1080 pixel HD display.

That's not bad for notebooks with starting prices of $549.

Unfortunately the Fit notebooks will all have 14 or 15 inch screens, so fans of smaller notebooks will have to wait to see if Sony's new designs trickle down to the company's next-gen 13 and 11.6 inch models.

The Sony Fit notebooks will offer from 4GB to 8GB of RAM, up to 1TB of disk space, and a choice of processors ranging from Intel Pentium to Intel Core i7. They'll also be configurable with NVIDIA graphics cards.

In case the inclusion of touchscreens wasn't a giveaway, each model will also ship with Windows 8 software.
