At Creative's recent Annual General Meeting it made a surprise announcement – a plan to enter the e-book sector. The machine is tentatively named the MediaBook, featuring text-to-speech functionality, an SD card slot, and a touchscreen for ease of use. The new e-reader runs Creative's Zii Technology.
The e-book market is starting to look crowded, with newcomers like IRex and enTourage joining a category led by Amazon with the Kindle. Creative's distinction is that, according to Creative VP Willie Png, the e-book will rock "videos, pictures, text and services in one device that supports a media-rich experience."
Creative has been in talks with up to 10 international and local publishers in order to add content to their Mediabook. Singapore Press Holdings, which publishes 17 newspapers and over 100 magazines, is one that announced its intention to get on board with Creative:
"We are discussing with Creative how SPH, as a significant content provider in Singapore, can provide what it has – stories, images, videos or radio programmes – for the e-reader."
