MagicJack hack turns an Eee PC into a mobile telephone jack

magiceee

The MagicJack is USB dongle that you can plug into any computer to enable free or low cost VoIP calls using a standard telephone handset. But if you don't want to carry around a USB dongle, it turns out you can cut it open and install the components inside a netbook. And that's exactly what one member of the MagicJack support forums has done.

Basically, he took apart the MagicJack's plastic shell, attached it to and Asus Eee PC 1000HE motherboard via a USB connection, and drilled a hole in the case to plug in a phone. This particular hack involves swapping out the actual phone jack with a 1/8th inch headphone jack so it will only work with an appropriately configured telephone. But theoretically you could try something similar with a phone jack allowing you to plug in any phone.

When the MagicJack software is running, the netbook won't go to sleep properly. But there's a way around that problem.
