Lightcomm UPC801 netbook with 8.9 inch screen, AMD Geode CPU

lightcomm upc801While AMD is pushing its newer, faster, not-really-for-netbook Congo processors, Lightcomm Technologies is using a much older, slower AMD chip in its new netbook. The Lightcomm UPC801 has a 500MHz AMD Geode processor, which should help the netbook run for up to 5 hours using a 3 cell, 2800mAh battery. Just don't expect it to be a speed demon.

The processor is x86 compatible, and the computer ships with Windows XP. It also has an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel matte display, an  8G SSD, and a ridiculously small touchpad and keyboard. Even for an 8.9 inch laptop, the keyboard is a bit small. And there's no real excuse for that, since there's a bit of room around the edges  of the keyboard. There's also a small shift key on the right side of the keyboard.

The UPC801 has 2 USB ports, Ethernet, and VGA ports and a flash card reader.

Lightcomm is a Shenzhen, China-based company, so I wouldn't expect to see this laptop ship worldwide unless the company works with a Western company to rebrand it.

You can check out a video of the laptop from Netbook News after the break.
