Archos 101 G9 Turbo Tablet Now Available in France
The new Archos 101 G9 tablet is now available in France. This device comes in several versions, suited for the needs of different kinds of users. One has a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4 dual core processor, while another has a processor with 1.2 GHz speed and still another, with a 1.5 GHz speed. The one with a 1.5 GHz speed is currently unavailable in the US but is now for sale in the French market.
Apart from the processor speed, this new version of the Archos 101 G9 has other differences with the 1.2 GHz one. For one, its graphics are powered by PowerVR SGX540 384 MHz.
In terms of benchmark utilities such as GPU Bench, Quadrant, Vellamo, and NenaMark, this new model is slightly better than the older one.
However, most of the specifications are still the same. The Archos 101 G9 1.5 tablet has a display that measures 10.1, with a resolution of 1280 x 800. It carries 8GB or 16GB of flash storage or, optionally, a 250GB hard disk drive.
The multicore processor also makes it possible to play the High Profile codec (H.264) for full High Definition 1080p video files. There is also a front-facing camera with 720p.
This device currently runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb but will soon be available on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

ASUS Eee PC R051BX Introduces a New Wave of Eee PC Line
ASUS restructures its naming to its netbook range apparently with the appearance of ASUS Eee PC R051BX. There are no official statement from ASUS yet whether the seashell line up is gone or there is a new model line with a new chassis design.
What we know is that the ASUS Eee PC R051BX comes with 1.0GHz, AMD C-60 CPU, a gig of DDR3 RAM and 320 GB Hard Drive. There will be configurations that may come up later. Connectivity wise, there will be HDMI since the C-60 is capable of 1080p output. The 10.1 inch netbook also has 2 USB 2.o, VGA, SD card reader and Ethernet ports.
Looking at the unit's specs, this looks like a stripped down 1015BX since it only has 2 USB ports and no USB 3.0. It only has 3-cell battery rated at 2200mAH that will give 4-5 hour battery life, but in real world application it should be around 2-3 hours of autonomy.
The price of this device is about € 250 MSRP, very inviting since it has Radeon 6290 that offers DirectX 11 support.

HTC Flyer Will Have ICS Update?
There has been a rumor floating around that the HTC Flyer may get an ICS update.
Stylus support in the HTC Flyer is limited. It can only use the stylus in certain apps not the entire system. In short, it does replace your fingers. HTC did not implement palm rejection. Samsung supports the S-Pen system wide on its Galaxy Note. If the HTC Flyer could nab an ICS update, stylus support could change.
When Ice Cream Sandwich was revealed by Google, it is stated that the OS would have system-wide stylus support built-in:
Android 4.0 includes full support for stylus input events, including tilt and distance axes, pressure, and related motion event properties. To help applications distinguish motion events from different sources, the platform adds distinct tool types for stylus, finger, mouse, and eraser. For improved input from multi-button pointing devices, the platform now provides distinct primary, secondary, and tertiary buttons, as well as back and forward buttons. Hover-enter and hover-exit events are also added, for improved navigation and accessibility. Developers can build on these new input features to add powerful interactions to their apps, such as precise drawing and gesturing, handwriting and shape recognition, improved mouse input, and others.
So how did this information leaked out? Supposedly a customer called HTC customer service after he/she was unhappy with the Gingerbread UI HTC implemented. The customer service rep replied that there options that the customer could follow like downgrading to Gingerbread by sending the HTC back to them or wait up for the ICS update this quarter of the year.
So what's the deal with the Flyer and ICS? Well, supposedly a customer unhappy with the changes to the UI from Gingerbread, which the Flyer originally shipped with, to Honeycomb complained to HTC customer service. The customer service rep said that the customer could either send the Flyer in to HTC so they could downgrade it to Gingerbread, or the customer could wait for the ICS update slated for sometime in Q1 this year.
HTC did not announce anything yet so better take this news with a grain of salt.

HP Mini 1104 Now Available
It is now safe to say that netbook interest are not on the highs right now with iPad and other tablets populating the market. Still, there are people that loves to have full computing experience in a small and inexpensive package. Ultrabooks are out of the equation because of its steep price.
HP has added the Mini 1104 to the netbook market. Its specs won't wow everyone, as well as its design. It's a utilitarian device because aimed at business and studying users.
The Mini 1104 runs on a dual-core, Intel 1.6GHz Atom N2600 processor and GMA 3600 GPU. It also has 2GB of RAM and 320 GB of 5400 RPM HDD. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1024×600. For connectivity and peripherals, the Mini 1104 has 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and VGA out. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also supported. HSPA+ and GPS are optional. This netbook can be purchased with Windows 7 or FreeDOS installed.
The HP Mini 1104 is a decent but uninspiring alternative to a mobile-OS tablet for users. But it's cheap at only $399.

Netbooks Going Extinct with Intel Atom CPUs?
While it's not much of a big-seller for the past months, it seems that Intel Atom chips are heading for its end. Intel recently published its financial results for Q4 2011 as well as for the whole year. However, despite its large overall record sales, this wasn't enough to save one particular CPU series from its decline.
According to the report, the revenue brought by the Atom micro-architecture was of $167 million. This figure doesn't sound that bad, but compared with the third quarter of 2010, it shows a 38 %drop, and as much as 57% compared to the fourth quarter of 2010.
Atom is Intel's series of central processing units for low-cost and low-power systems and mobile products. It had a very good run by the time netbooks were a hit. However, this has changed since the tablet came into the picture. In addition, Atom also had rival s in the market, such as the NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Qualcomm Snapdragon.
One may think that the Santa Clara, California-based IT giant is quietly and slowly letting go of the Atom name in order to avoid the shame in terms of power efficiency, compared to ARM units. Nonetheless, the chips themselves won't disappear, even if netbooks and the Atom processors do.

ASUS, Acer and Lenovo Ultrabooks Get Thunderbolt
Computer makers, ASUS, Acer and Lenovo, are rumored once again to be preparing new batch of ultrabooks with the Thunderbolt connectivity technology. Created by Intel, this technology uses two major protocols for transmissions. One of them is the PCI Express interface, for moving data, while the other is DisplayPort, for images/video.
According to source, the three well-knoen notebook makers have decided to add Thunderbolt into their ultrabooks and will be competing against each other when this next batch of machines is out.
While Thunderbolt is quite expensive, this technology will only be available to selected models. Thunderbolt will add an extra $20 to the price of any ultrabook. Given how PC makers are striving to make these laptops cheaper instead of more expensive, this means that only high-end models will go forward with it.
While ultrabooks are mostly powered by Intel's Ivy Bridge CPU, this platform has native support for USB 3.0, which is very fast on its own. Though it will mot actually replace USB 2.0 until 2013, it is a very convenient alternative to the Thunderbolt that has yet to actually score many design wins.
Acer, Asus and Lenovo expects ultrabooks to account for 25-35% of its 2012 laptop sales, hoping to see the newcomers grow and sell quickly like netbooks did before tablets came along.

Asus Shows off U44SG Gaming Laptop
ASUS quietly rolled out a new gaming laptop at the CES: Asus U44SG. At the convention, the notebook was seen running Portal 2 and doing quite will with it. The gameplay was smooth in possibly the high graphical settings. Anything with system requirements of Portal 2 may run in this machine smoothly.
The U44SG is a 14-incher equipped with Sandy Bridge processors ranging from Core i3-2310M to the Core i7-2640M. The laptop can take in as much as 8GB of RAM and you can have up to 750 GB of traditional spinning disk or up to 320GB of SSD.
The U44SG comes with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics but it can also be equipped with Nvidia 610M video card as well and it comes with 1GB of dedicated memory. You can switch between the two for battery life. You can switch graphics with the Optimus Technology so that you want have to restart your system everytime you use one over the other.
Asus claims that the notebook can run up to 10 hours of autonomy. Expect a drastic fall in battery life if you game or any other hardcore usage of the processors and /or graphics solution.
The display is 1366×768 of glossy material. Ports include USB 2.0 and 3.0 and HDMI. The laptop is also armed with Altec Lansing sound.
