Aspire Aspire One D260 reviewed

The Acer Aspire One D260 netbook is sort of what you would get if you crossed an Aspire One 532h with an Aspire One D521. If that doesn't mean anything to you, all three netbooks are 10 inch machines with 1024 x 600 pixel displays and low power processors. But like the 532h, the Acer Aspire One D260 has an Intel Atom processor and GMA 3150 graphics… but it has almost the same case design as the Acer Aspire One 521 (which has an AMD chipset instead).

The folks at Laptop Magazine took the new Aspire One D260 for a spin and found that it performs pretty much as you'd expect a netbook with an Intel Atom Pine trail processor. And that's not a bad thing at all, given the low $299 price tag for this model.

The netbook also has a 1.83GHz Intel Atom N470 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. There's no Bluetooth, and the 6 cell battery lasted for about 5 hours in Laptop Mag's test. That's below average for an Atom powered netbook, but 5 hours really isn't that bad for any laptop at this price point (although there are models such as the Asus Eee PC 1001P which get much better battery life and cost about the same).

It's worth pointing out that while we'd seen reports suggesting that this model would be available with Google's Android operating system running alongside Windows 7 Starter Edition, it doesn't look like Acer is offering that configuration at the moment.

Cheap Acer Clones Are Getting Almost As Good As The Real Thing

When you hear of hardware clones, you're probably familiar with stuff coming from China. A lot of these clones are usually substandard but with the increasing skill of the manufacturers and the components becoming even cheaper, these clones can practically go toe-to-toe with the real thing. The above picture shows a good example of this phenomenon. Called the S30 by the manufacturer, Dai Rui, it is inspired by the Acer Aspire One series.

The S30 is so fascinating because it essentially has the same specs as the product it's trying to clone: 10″ LCD screen, an Intel Atom N450 chip (1.66MHz), a gig of DDR2 RAM, a 5400rpm 2.5 hard drive, Wi-Fi and USB ports. Also, you'd be hard-pressed to choose which one is the original when you put them beside an actual Acer Aspire model. The biggest and only difference it seems is the price. Most netbooks from the big companies are around 350 to 500 dollars – this baby costs only 120 dollars. Now that's a lot of savings.

Bandai introduces limited edition Miffy netbook

Bandai is celebrating its 55th anniversary by doing what the company does best: adorning something with cute cartoon characters. The limited edition Miffy netbook features cutesy drawings of a bunny as well as fish, puppies, elephants, and other members of the animated animal kingdom on the case.

As with other Bandai-themed netbooks, the Miffy edition also comes with several games and other apps associated with the cartoon character.

On the inside, the Miffy netbook is pretty standard netbook fare, with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. It has a 3 cell battery, 2 USB ports, and weighs 2.4 pounds. The netbook is available with either Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Oh, and these Japanese netbooks are available for pre-order today for about $900 and up. Cuteness doesn't come cheap.

New designer notebook options from Dell, MSI

Dell has been leading the pack when it comes to offering custom designs for laptop lids for a while, thanks to the company's Dell Design Studio. The site lets you choose from a number of themes, including Major League Baseball, (PRODUCT) RED, and OPI Nail Lacquer shades. Now the company has added a series of designs from members of the Threadless community.

More than 80,000 artists contribute to the community, and over a million people regularly vote on T-shirt designs. While Threadless is still best known for T-shirts, there are now 11 designer laptop lids available in the Dell Design Studio as part of the Threadless collection.

Of course, Dell isn't the only company that offers designer laptop lids. We see special edition notebooks from other companies all the time, such as the new limited edition MSI computers with Los Angeles Dodgers branding. MSI is offering a Wind Top AE2220 all-in-one desktop and an MSI Wind U135DX as part of th epromotion.

But Dell still wins hands down when it comes to the sheer number of design options the company offers for its notebooks and netbooks.

MeeGo 1.01 software update for netbook OS gets launched

Good news for early adopters of the MeeGo software platform. If you're already running the MeeGo OS on your netbook and would like to see some improvement or are still looking into it, MeeGo version 1.01 has just been released and from the reports about its performance so far, it seems like worth the update. Reportedly, this first update to the MeeGo OS for netbooks brings over 100 bug fixes, performance improvements across the board, added visual improvements, and an "Enhanced netbook window manager". Asus briefly leaks Eee PC 1005PX on own web site

Just because Asus won't ship any new netbooks until August of this year, doesn't mean the Taiwanese company can't keep working on new netbook models for their loyal customers (and tease them briefly with it, for that matter). The Asus Eee PC 1005PX seems to be the next "new" netbook model from Asus to watch out for, as it was briefly leaked on the Asus web site with a picture and a few of its key features. It will sport a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, up to 320GB hard drives, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, and a 6-cell battery that should be good for 8.5-hours of battery life. It also comes with a built-in webcam and customers can choose between Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter Edition for the bundled operating system. But the most noteworthy thing about the Asus Eee PC 1005PX is the fact that it will ship with a 1024×600 matte LCD screen. Meaning, you can actually use it with you outdoors when you bring it out.

Jolicloud 1.0 to launch next week

The Jolicloud operating system for netbooks has been available to public beta testers for ages, so I was actually a little surprised to notice that Jolicloud 1.0 is officially launching next week. I had kind of assumed that had already happened. But if you've been holding out on trying this Linux-based netbook operating system with a strong focus on web apps and social networking until the beta label was gone, it looks like the wait is almost over.

The latest version of Jolicloud comes preloaded with Firefox and quick aces s to web and desktop apps including Gmail, Skype, and Twitter. You can install new apps (adding icons to the Jolicloud program launcher) with a single click. And you can organize the program launcher to meet your needs.

There are over 700 web and native apps available in the Jolicloud App Center. Users can also share their apps with friends, which means if you know other people using Jolicloud you can find out which apps they're trying and check them out yourself.

Because the Jolicloud user interface is HTML5 and web-based, you can organize your account from any computer with an HTML5-compatible web browser — you don't need to have your netbook handy.

The Jolicloud team will start rolling out Jolicloud 1.0 to existing users next week.

Limited Edition LA Dodgers MSI Wind netbook

MSI have teamed up with MLB Team, the LA Dodgers to bring fans an exclusive and limited edition MSI Wind netbook. Or for those who need something bigger than a netbook, one of the MSI Wind Tops has been transformed to feature LA Dodgers branding.

The MSI Wind U135DX netbook has been revamped to include the Dodgers emblem on the lid of the machine, while under the keyboard the "LA" placing. Digital Dodgers content can also be found on the netbook. Specs include a 10 inch display, 250GB hard drive, 1GB of DDR3 RAM as well as Intel GMA 3150 graphics, Intel Atom N455 CPU and built in wifi. Unfortunately pricing hasn't been released yet, or information on when you can expect to be able to grab the LA Dodgers MSI Wind netbook.

The MSI Wind Top AE2220 on the other hand, features a 21.5 inch screen, with 4GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 Dup T6600 CPU, 640GB hard drive as well as a DVD drive. Again pricing and release info is currently unknown.

Acer Aspire One clones going for $190 in China

I'd forgive you if you told me that the picture above showed a stack of Acer Aspire One netbooks. They're actually Chinese mini-notebooks from a company called Dai Rui. But they bear a more-than-passing resemblance to the Acer Aspire One, which I'm pretty sure is exactly what Dai Rui was going for.

The main difference (aside from the lack of Acer branding), is the fact that these little notebooks are dirt cheap, going for about $190. They're also only available in China at the moment, but the company behind them hopes to export them to other markets.

The netbook features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of memory, and a 2.5 inch hard drive. They also feature WiFi and optional 3G components, as well as a 10 inch display, Ethernet, and 3 USB ports, which are interestingly packed onto the right side of the laptop, leaving the left side mostly bare.
